Alok Verma removed as CBI chief by PM Modi-led selection committee

A committee led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday removed Alok Verma as CBI Director, two days after the Supreme Court scrapped a government order and reinstated him.
The committee, which also included Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress party’s leader in the Lok Sabha, and Supreme Court Justice A K Sikri, removed Verma after considering the Central Vigilance Commission’s (CVC) investigation of corruption charges against the officer.
Verma was removed on charges of corruption and dereliction of duty, news agency PTI reported quoting unnamed officials. The Congress said Verma's removal proved Modi was "too afraid" of the allegations the party had made against his government.
.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday reinstated Verma as the agency chief, setting aside the CVC and the Centre's October 23 decision to divest him of his powers to function as its head but with a caveat that he will not take any policy decision till a high-level committee goes into the issue afresh.
Verma will retire at the end of this month.
