Citizenship protests LIVE: PM to address rally at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan

Violent protests against the amended Citizenship Act raged on across Uttar Pradesh on Saturday taking the death toll to 16 in the state, while large-scale vandalism and disruption of rail and road traffic were witnessed in Bihar during a bandh called by the RJD. The Congress, Left and other opposition parties led demonstrations in many states including Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, demanding that the contentious law be scrapped. Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Azad was arrested when he came outside Jama Masjid, where he had taken part in a demonstration on Friday, and was later sent to judicial custody for 14 days by a court.
Meanwhile, elaborate security arrangements have been made for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally on Sunday at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan, which is a little over a kilometre away from Old Delhi's Daryaganj that was hit by violence on Friday during the protest against the amended Citizenship Act.

Modi rally
Elaborate security arrangements have been made for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally on Sunday at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan, which is a little over a kilometre away from Old Delhi's Daryaganj that was hit by violence on Friday during the protest against the amended Citizenship Act. According to a senior police official, 20 companies of outside force will be deployed. Each company has 70-80 personnel. Area sanitisation means that the movement of locals will be restricted, shops will be closed and security personnel will be deployed.

Police says 50 troublemakers identified through video in Gorakhpur
Police on Saturday released photographs of around 50 people allegedly involved in protest against the amended citizenship law here after the Jumma namaz (Friday prayers) here. The police said the trouble makers have been identified on the basis of video footage. "Around 50 people involved in the violence have been identified through video footage and their pictures will be put up all crossroads and major spots," said Kotwali Circle Officer VP Singh told reporters here. He said whosoever will give information about them will be awarded. "Around 30 people were detained but five to six among them have been freed. We don't want to arrest or take action against any innocent person but culprits will not be spared," he said.

Exempt Assam from amended Citizenship Act, demands Gorkhas
Major civil society organisations of Gorkhas in Assam on Saturday demanded that the state be exempt from the purview of the contentious citizenship law and that the Clause 6 of the Assam Accord be implemented immediately. As per the Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, the "constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards, as may be appropriate, shall be provided to protect, preserve and promote the cultural, social, linguistic identity and heritage of the Assamese people."

The Jamia Millia Islamia students on Saturday staged a demonstration yet again outside the varsity campus against amendments in the citizenship law, days after violent clashes between police and agitationists in its vicinity. The demonstration was led by woman students of the central varsity and was later joined by its male students as well as alumni and "outsiders".

Press Association condemns 'attack' on journalists during protests
The Press Association, a leading body of journalists, on Saturday strongly condemned "attack and unnecessary harassment" of journalists during coverage of protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act. In a statement, the Association said, it was also concerned over incidents of burning of media OB vans during the protests and appealed to all sections to realise the need of a free and fair press and the importance of media during incidents of national importance.

CAA protesters gather at Gandhi statue in London
Hundreds of students and other groups gathered around the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Parliament Square in London on Saturday to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC) in India. The peaceful protest, called with a message to "Defend the Indian Constitution", brought together a number of UK-based South Asian organisations who chanted slogans of "Azadi" and waved the Indian Tricolour and placards calling for a withdrawal of the CAA and the NRC. "We are here to say that we stand in solidarity with Jamia and AMU (Aligarh Muslim University) and all other students and people protesting across India," said one of the demonstrators.

RJD Bihar Bandh : TV journalist roughed up in Patna
A journalist of a leading news channel here was on Saturday roughed up by persons trying to enforce the day-long bandh called by the RJD-led opposition Grand Alliance in Bihar in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the proposed National Register for Citizens. Prakash Singh, who works with Republic TV, shared video clips of the incident with media persons wherein he, along with cameraman Suraj can be seen being manhandled by bandh supporters at the Dak Bungalow crossing in the city.

Assamese community protests against Citizenship Act in Goa
Members of the Assamese community held a peaceful protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Panaji on Saturday. The demonstration was held at Azad Maidan here under the banner of `Assam Society of Goa', whose members are those who hail from the northeastern state and who work or have settled down in the coastal state. Its spokeperson Deepak Kalita said the Union government should focus on providing basic things like food, jobs and good roads instead of allowing people from Bangladesh into Assam on the pretext of religious persecution.

Curfew in Mangaluru relaxed with situation peaceful
Curfew was relaxed in Mangaluru on Saturday with the situation in the city whichwas rocked by violent protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act leaving two dead in police firing, peaceful. The situation in Bengaluru and other parts of the state, where prohibitory orders were in place, was also peaceful with no major protests taking place. Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, who visited Mangaluru to assess the situation on Saturday, said an inquiry will be conducted into the violence that rocked the coastal city, as he announced relaxation in the curfew clamped.

'Threat to Pak increasing due to anti-CAA protest in India'
Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday expressed apprehension that India could carry out a "false flag operation" against it to divert attention from its domestic situation and warned that it will give a befitting response to any such action. Khan in a series of tweets said that under the Modi government, India has been moving towards "Hindu Rashtra" with its "fascist ideology".

Chandra Shekhar Aazad sent to 14 days' judicial custody
A Delhi court on Saturday sent Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Aazad, who was arrested in connection with the violence in Old Delhi's Daryaganj area, to 14 day's judicial custody. Aazad, who was arrested earlier in the day, sought bail from the court on the ground that there is no evidence that he instigated the Jama Masjid crowd to go to Delhi Gate where the protesters had turned violent.

Protests continue against CAA in Hyderabad
Protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) by different organisations continued peacefully in the city on Saturday, police said. Raising slogans against the Narendra Modi government, a group of people staged a protest at Santosh Nagar here holding placards that read Boycott CAA and NRC, Stop Burning India, India vs BJP among others. Some shops and a few business establishments near the historic Charminar remained shut with the owners observing silent protest against CAA and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and voluntarily downing shutters.

Seelampur violence: 11 sent to two-week judicial custody
A Delhi court Saturday sent 11 people, arrested in connection with violence in Seemapuri area of northeast Delhi on Friday, to 14 days' judicial custody, a lawyer in the case said. Metropolitan Magistrate Mayank Mittal sent the accused to jail as the police did not seek their custodial interrogation, said advocate Nitya Ramakrishnan, who represented the accused people.

Death toll mounts to 15 in UP violence
Fresh cases of stone pelting took place in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur and Rampur on Saturday against the Citizenship Amendment Act, while 15 people, including an eight-year-old boy, were killed since Thursday in violent agitations in different parts of the state. "Women and children were used as shields by the protestors," Director General of Police O P Singh said on Saturday maintaining that police did not open fire. "All the deaths that took place have been in cross firing and this will become clear in postmortem examination," the DGP told reporters. "We are clear and transparent in this. If anyone died due to our fire we will conduct a judicial inquiry and take action. But nothing happened from our side," the DGP stressed.

Amid protests, three Hindus from Pak get citizenship in Gujarat
Even as protests continue against the Citizenship Amendment Act across the country, a Gujarat Lok Sabha MP on Saturday handed out citizenship certificates to three members of a Hindu family who came to India from Pakistan seeking refuge over a decade ago. Rajkot Lok Sabha MP Mohan Kundariya handed out the certificates to Harsinh Sodha, Sarupsinh Sodha and Parbatsinh Sodha, who came to India in 2007, at a function held in Vavdi village in Morbi. Kundariya said a thousand such Hindu refugees who are residing in Morbi would soon get citizenship, thanks to the CAA passed by the Narendra Modi government.

Rajasthan will not implement amended citizenship act: State minister
Congress-ruled Rajasthan will not implement the amended Citizenship Act, state's Parliamentary Affairs Minister Shanti Dhariwal said on Saturday. "We are not going to implement this act in the state," Dhariwal told reporters here. He said that the Act was a "blow" on secularism.

Two-day judicial custody for 15 held over Daryaganj violence
Fifteen people arrested in connection with the violence in Old Delhi's Daryaganj area were sent to two days' judicial custody by a city court on Saturday. The police had sought 14 days' judicial custody of the arrested people. One of those arrested claimed he was a juvenile.

Delhi Waqf Board to give Rs 5.5 lakh to kin of those killed in protests
The Delhi Waqf Board on Saturday announced that it will give a financial assistance of Rs 5.5 lakh each to the families of those killed during violent protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. Board chairman Amanatullah Khan, also an AAP MLA, in a Facebook post claimed that several people were killed in Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka's Mangalore during protests against the CAA and NRC, due to "police bullets".

Restricting entry into Mangaluru murder of democracy: Siddaramaiah
The Congress leader had to cancel his trip to Mangaluru from Bengaluru on Friday also on getting information that the chartered aircraft he was to take was denied permission to land at the airport. "I had to go to Mangaluru yesterday at 2 pm, but Mangaluru airport was told not to allow my chartered flight to land, we were denied permission, this is murder of democracy," Siddaramaiah told reporters here.

Violence in Kanpur, police post torched Kanpur
Anti-citizenship law protestors set Yatimkhana police post here on fire on Saturday and indulged in heavy brickbatting, leading to injury to some people, a senior official said. Police had to lob tear gas shells and use canes to chase them away. Fire tenders were rushed to control the flame. ADG (Kanpur) Prem Prakash said RAF has been called out along with 'Vajr' vehicles to control the situation. Samajwadi Party MLA Amitabh Bajpai and former MLA and SP leader Kamlesh Tewari have been arrested as a precautionary measure and their vehicles have also been seized.
