Coronavirus LIVE: India cases at 5,020,359; Pune records 231,196 cases

 Coronavirus India updates: India has crossed the grim 5-million mark by recording 90,123 cases in the last 24 hours. With this, India is rapidly nearing the US tally of 6.7 million. The death toll has risen by 1,283 to 82,091. The government prevented 1.4-2.9 million coronavirus cases and 37,000-78,000 deaths due to the disease by imposing the nationwide lockdown that was announced on March 24, the Lok Sabha was informed on Tuesday.

Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have reported the highest number of cases. However, infections are rising rapidly in states like Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Meanwhile, Delhi recorded 4,263 new corona cases, pushing the tally to 225,000. The worst-hit states are Maharashtra (1,097,856) Andhra Pradesh (583,000), Tamil Nadu (5,14,208), Karnataka (4,75,265), and UP (324,036). Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has tested positive for the coronavirus. 

Coronavirus vaccine update: ICMR Director General Dr Balram Bhargava today said three vaccines are at the clinical trial stage in India. "Cadila and Bharat Biotech have completed phase-I trials. Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) Dr V G Somani has gave permission to Serum Institute of India to resume clinical trial of the Oxford Covid-19 vaccine candidate.

World coronavirus update: The global tally of coronavirus cases stands at 29,715,422. While 21,523,712 have recovered, 938,406 have died so far. The US, the worst-hit country, 6,787,739 cases. It is followed by India, which has 5,020,359 cases, Brazil (4,384,299) and Russia (1,073,849).

Serum Institute gets nod for resumption of Oxford vax trials
The Serum Institute of India has received approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) to resume the clinical trial of the Oxford Covid-19 vaccine candidate, officials from the drug manufacturing company confirmed on Wednesday.
 
India is the manufacturing partner of the vaccine candidate named Covishield, developed jointly by the University of Oxford's Jenner Institute's and AstraZeneca. The Pune-based firm is looking after the trials at 17 trial sites across India.
 
The permission to resume comes three days after AstraZeneca announced that it has resumed trials in the UK. On September 9, the trials were halted after one of the participants in the UK reported a suspected severe adverse reaction when administered a booster dose of the vaccine candidate.

China says has seen positive results in China-UAE phase 3 Covid-19 vaccine trials
China and the United Arab Emirates have seen some positive results in their Phase III Covid-19 vaccine trials, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told a news briefing in Beijing on Monday.

The United Arab Emirates on Monday granted emergency approval for use of a coronavirus vaccine, six weeks after human trials in the Gulf Arab state started.

Rajasthan reports 7 more Covid-19 deaths, toll 1271 now
Rajasthan on Wednesday recorded seven more coronavirus fatalities, taking the overall toll in the state to 1,271, according to a health department bulletin.
 
The state also reported 802 new cases Wednesday, which pushed the total number of infection to 1,06,700, of whom 17,541 people are under treatment, it said. As per the bulletin, so far, 86,333 people have been discharged after treatment.
 
In Jaipur, the death toll from the coronavirus infection has reached 304 till now, followed by 125 in Jodhpur, 99 in Bikaner, 90 in Ajmer, 89 in Kota, 73 in Bharatpur, 49 in Pali, 44 in Nagaur, 37 in Udaipur, 31 in Alwar, 26 in Barmer and 24 in Dholpur.

Maharashtra coronavirus update: Thane records 1,600 Covid cases; 34 deaths
With the addition of 1,600 new cases of COVID-19, the tally in Maharashtra's Thane district has reached 1,49,440, a district official said on Wednesday.
 
Apart from the new cases recorded on Tuesday, the district also reported 34 casualties that took the COVID-19 toll to 3,983, the official said.
 
 
Despite the steady rise in infections, the recovery rate in the district stands at 85.20 per cent and the count of discharged patients has reached 1,27,315, he said.
 
The district currently has 18,141 active cases, he added.

Over 30 vaccine candidates supported, 3 in advance trials, says Govt
The government on Wednesday said more than 30 vaccine candidates for coronavirus have been supported, and three of them are in advance stages of trials now, while four are in advanced pre-clinical development stage.
 
Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai also told the Rajya Sabha that 13 clinical trials of repurposed drugs have been undertaken to build a portfolio of therapeutic options for COVID-19 patients.
