Coronavirus update: A day after a record spike of over 90,000, India has seen a major drop in the number of new cases. The country's tally now stands at 4,284,103. Death toll has reached 72,816. Today, Delhi reported 2,077 new coronavirus cases, taking the total number of people infected with the novel coronavirus in the national capital to 1,93,526.
 
Just five states -- Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh -- contribute over 60 per cent of total Covid-19 cases, 62 per cent of active cases and 70 per cent of overall fatality reported due to the virus in India, the Union Health Ministry said. Nearly 5 million Covid-19 tests have been conducted to date, with 720,000 of them carried out in the last 24 hours. However, for every million of the population, India has conducted only 35,842 tests.
 
Coronavirus vaccine update: A senior World Health Organization advisor has said that WHO is in talks with India about joining the "COVAX" global vaccine allocation plan. The clinical trials for the Covid-19 vaccine candidate developed by the University of Oxford, which was expected to start at The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, have been delayed by at least a week over safety approvals.
 
World coronavirus update: The global tally of coronavirus cases stands at 27,479,114. While 19,572,911 have recovered, 896,421 have died so far. The US, the worst-hit country, has 6,485,567 cases. It is followed by India which has 4,284,103, Brazil (4,147,794) and Russia (1,030,690).

Bihar: 1,667 more Covid-19 cases, tally at 17,787
As many as 1,667 new Covid-19 cases were reported from Bihar on Monday, informed the State Health Department on Tuesday. The active cases in the State have risen to 17,787. Among the new cases, 208 reported from Patna, 129 from Purnia, and 119 from Araria.
 
Meanwhile, with a spike of 75,809 new cases in the last 24 hours, India's Covid-19 tally surged to 42,80,423, informed the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday.
 
As many as 1,133 deaths were reported during the 24 hours.

MLAs, Assembly staff in Bengal undergo rapid antigen test ahead of two-day session
Several MLAs, Assembly staff and mediapersons underwent Covid-19 test on Tuesday, as part of the pandemic-related safety measures, ahead of the two-day monsoon session of the House, beginning September 9.
 
Speaker Biman Banerjee had said last week that the session will be held in strict compliance with ICMR guidelines, and every individual will have to undertake the Covid-19 test before entering the House.
 
According to sources in the Assembly, MLAs, staff members and journalists, planning to attend the proceedings, formed separate queues on the premises of the House, and underwent rapid antigen tests, while maintaining social distancing norms.

Andaman & Nicobar Island's Covid-19 tally rises to 3,359
Twenty-seven more people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, taking the coronavirus tally in the union territory to 3,359, an official said on Tuesday. Of the 27 new cases, 20 were detected during local contact tracing and seven were airport arrivals, the official said.
 
All passengers coming from the mainland have to mandatorily undergo rapid antigen test for Covid-19 at the airport here on arrival, he said.
 
At least 50 people recovered from Covid-19 in the last 24-hours, the official said, adding that the total number of recoveries in the union territory has risen to 2,997.

Singapore: 13,000 foreign workers barred from resuming work for missing COvid-19 testing deadline
Around 13,000 foreign workers in Singapore were not allowed to resume work after they missed the deadline to undergo the mandatory fortnightly COVID-19 testing, officials said on Tuesday.
 
The AccessCode Status for these 13,000 foreign workers will remain "red" and they cannot return to work, said the Ministry of Health.
 
This is to protect the health and safety of the other workers, it added.
 
The workers missed the September 5 deadline to undergo the fortnightly Rostered Routine Testing (RRT).

Railways achieves 31% of targeted capex in five months despite Covid-19
Braving the odds of lockdown and Covid-19, the Indian Railways has achieved around 31 per cent of its planned capital expenditure during the first five months of the financial year, from April to August.
 
The national transporter has achieved about Rs 50,000 crore of its planned capex of Rs 1.61 trillion for 2020-21 in the first five months, despite the covid situation, Railways Minister Piyush Goyal said addressing a CII summit on Tuesday. During the time of lockdown, the Railways increased the pace of infrastructure works and also completed almost 200 infrastructure projects that needed a traffic blockade. Out of the total capex of 1.61 trillion, the budgetary allocation for the current year was around Rs 70,000 crore. The capex for the last financial year was Rs 1.56 trillion. Read more

Puducherry coronavirus toll climbs to 337 with 12 deaths
Puducherry continued to see an upward trend in Covid-19 deaths as 12 more people died of the deadly virus on Tuesday, raising the toll in the union territory to 337. A release from Director of Health and Family Welfare S Mohan Kumar said 440 new cases of the viral infection were reported, pushing the overall tally to 17,749.
 
Of the fresh cases as many as 4,831 were active followed by 12,581 cases of recovery and discharge.
 
The Director said 440 new cases were identified after examination of 2,081 samples in the last 24 hours, while 446 patients were discharged from hospitals.

India conducted over 50 million coronavirus tests till date: Health Min
India's cumulative tests for detection of Covid-19 have surpassed 50 mn, while tests per million have witnessed a rise from 6,396 on July 1 to 36,703 as of date, the Union Health Ministry said on Tuesday.
 
Aggressive and widespread testing have essayed an important role in India's fight against the Covid pandemic, the ministry said.
 
India has come a long way from conducting just one test at the lab in the National Institute of Virology, Pune in January to 5,06,50,128 as on date with 10,98,621 samples beingtested in 24 hours testifying the enlarged testing capacity in the country.
 
"The average daily tests conducted (week-wise) are demonstrating a consistent increase. This has registered a 3.2 times expansion from third week of July (3,26,971) to first week of September (10,46,470)," the ministry said.

Pakistan reports 330 new coronavirus cases, 5 deaths
Pakistan reported 330 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, taking the total number of COVID-19 infections in the country to 299,233, according to official data.
 
Five more virus-related fatalities were recorded in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll in the country to 6,350, the Ministry of National Health Services said.
 
A total of 606 virus patients were in critical condition, the ministry said.
