Bangladesh origin ride-hailing app CEO found dismembered in New York flat

A Bangladesh origin tech entrepreneur and CEO has been murdered and his body dismembered in a luxury flat in New York city, according to media reports. He was 33 years old.
Fahim Saleh's sister found the body on Tuesday afternoon when she went to his $2.5 million-flat to check in on him, CBS, local New York TV channel, reported on Wednesday.

His killer may have been interrupted by her as he was cutting up the body with an electric saw.
The TV station reported that police said they have a video of her arriving at the apartment and his alleged killer was leaving about the same time after probably being interrupted by her ringing of the bell from the lobby.
It said that police are looking into the possibility that a business dispute was behind the killing.
According to his LinkedIn profile, he was the founder of Pathao, a Bangladesh-based company valued at $100 million that provides transportation and food delivery and offers a payment system.
He also lists himself as the founder and CEO of Gokada, a Nigerian company, which provides delivery service and motorcycle taxi service. It claims investments of $6.9 million.
New York Post said that Saleh was born in Saudi Arabia to Bangladeshi parents and grew up in Poughkeepsie in New York state.
It quoted unidentified sources as saying that the killing appeared to be a "professional" job and his limbs and head cut with "surgical precision".
The newspaper said that a surveillance video showed a man dressed in black following Saleh into his flat and tasering him after a dispute.

Pink Ball Test: India beat B'desh, record 12th successive home series win

An untested pink ball was not able to reduce the glaring gulf between the two teams as India bulldozed Bangladesh by an innings and 46 runs in their first ever day-night Test to record a 12th home series win in a row.
With Bangladesh resuming their second innings at 152 for six on day three and trailing India by 89 runs, it was simply a matter of time for the home team to complete formalities.
The Virat Kohli-led side eventually completed the job for in less than 50 minutes for their four straight innings victory, becoming the first team do so. Barring Mushfiqur Rahim (74), Bangladesh batsmen were once again found wanting against high quality pace bowling, folding up for 195 in 41.1 overs. They were bowled out for 130 on day one.
With the resounding win, India also extended their lead in the World Test Championship by collecting 120 points from the two-match series. India had hammered Bangladesh by an innings and 130 runs in the series opener in Indore.
Eden Gardens played the perfect host for the historic game with packed crowds on all three days bringing back memories of the times when Test cricket was more popular. However, the lack of competition on the field was nowhere close to the hype surrounding the game.
The SG pink ball, which had not been tested in a competitive game before the big game, expectedly assisted India's lethal pace attack which took all the wickets on offer. An evidence of their menacing form was the amount of concussion subs Bangladesh had to use after the batsmen received heavy blows.
While Ishant Sharma took a five-wicket haul in the first innings, Umesh Yadav did the same in the second.
The game will also be remembered for Virat Kohli's 27th Test ton, extending his overall tally to 70 international hundreds.

Millions evacuated as cyclone Bulbul strikes Bangladesh, India also hit

A strong cyclone made landfall early Sunday in Bangladesh, where hundreds of thousands of people have moved to shelters across the low-lying delta nation's vast coastal region.
Up to 1.8 million were expected to be evacuated by Saturday evening ahead of Cyclone Bulbul, said Enamur Rahman, Bangladesh's junior disaster management minister.

More than 5,000 shelters had been prepared by Saturday morning.
The cyclone was packing winds of up to 120 kilometers (75 miles) per hour and gusts of up to 130 kph (80 mph), but was forecast to weaken after crossing the coast.
It slammed ashore near Sagar Island and its path included the southwestern Khulna region, which has the world's largest mangrove forest, the Sundarbans, which straddles the Bangladesh-India border.
The weather office said coastal districts were likely to be inundated by storm surges of 1-2 meters (5-7 feet) above normal tide because of the impact of the cyclone.
Several ships from Bangladesh's navy and coast guard were kept ready in parts of the region for an emergency response, the TV station Independent reported.

The storm is also impacted parts of India. One death each has been reported from Bengal and Odisha due to heavy rain triggered by the very severe cyclonic storm Bulbul.
Rain lashed coastal West Bengal, uprooted trees leading to death of one person in the city.

According to US-based AccuWeather Inc., Bulbul strengthened from a deep depression into a tropical cyclone on Thursday morning, and by Friday afternoon had strengthened into a severe cyclone.
Bulbul was the equivalent of a Category 1 or 2 hurricane in the Atlantic, it said.
Rahman said the government suspended weekend leave for government officials in 13 coastal districts on Saturday.
On Saturday, volunteers used loudspeakers to ask people to move to shelters in Chittagong and other regions, according to the Disaster Management Ministry.
In the Cox's Bazar coastal district, tourists were alerted to stay in their hotels, while a few hundred visitors were stuck on Saint Martins Island.
Authorities suspended all activities in the country's main seaports, including in Chittagong, which handles almost 80 per cent of Bangladesh's exports and imports.
All vessels and fishing boats were told to stop operating.
Local authorities ordered school buildings and mosques to be used as shelters in addition to dedicated cyclone shelters -- raised concrete buildings that have been built over the past decades.
Bangladesh, a nation of 160 million people, has a history of violent cyclones.
But disaster preparedness programs in recent decades have upgraded the country's capacity to deal with natural disasters, resulting in fewer casualties.

Modi and Hasina sign 7 pacts after talks, LPG import project launched

Broadbasing their ties, India and Bangladesh on Saturday inked seven pacts and launched three projects after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held wide-ranging talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina.
One of the projects included import of LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) from Bangladesh for distribution in the North Eastern states.

The pacts signed after Modi-Hasina talks provided for deeper cooperation between the two countries in areas of water resources, youth affairs, culture, education and coastal surveillance.
In a brief media statement, Modi said India accords priority to its ties with Bangladesh and increasing cooperation between the two neighbouring countries should be model for the entire world.
"I am happy that today's talks will further energise our bilateral ties," he said in presence of Hasina.
Modi said in the last one year, the two sides launched a total of 12 projects, including three inaugurated on Saturday, which reflected the intensity in ties between the two sides.
In her remarks, Hasina said ties between the two countries have been on an upswing in the last few years including in areas of maritime security, civil nuclear energy and trade.
Earlier, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar called on Hasina.
"EAM @DrSJaishankar had a warm conversation with Bangladesh PM #SheikhHasina. Reaffirmed India's highest priority to her relations with Bangladesh," External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted.
The Bangladeshi prime minister arrived here on a four-day visit on Thursday.
She attended the World Economic Forum on Thursday and Friday.
This is her first visit to India since parliamentary elections were held in Bangladesh and India. Ties between the two countries have been on an upswing in the last few years.

Bangladesh signs deal with Reliance Power to buy electricity for 22 years

Bangladesh has signed an agreement to buy 718 megawatts of electricity from India's Reliance Power over the next 22 years, the company said on Sunday.
Reliance plans to invest about $1 billion to set up a local plant by 2022 to provide the electricity. The plant will be built at Meghnaghat in Narayanganj, over 20 km southeast of the capital Dhaka, according to a project report seen by Reuters at an event held to close the deal.

The combined-cycle power plant will be fueled by gas and regasification liquefied natural gas and be fully owned by Reliance.

Bangladesh agreed a deal with China last week to build renewable energy projects providing 500 megawatts by 2023 at an investment cost of $400 million, in the latest sign of Beijing's growing role in the South Asian nation's energy sector.
Bangladesh's installed power capacity is more than 20,000 MW and the country aims to provide electricity to all of its more than 160 million people by 2020. The country's energy sector has grown 12.5% in recent years, with renewable making up only 3% of the total, government officials said. Bangladesh plans to boost this to 10% by 2022.
Riva Ganguly Das, India's high commissioner in Bangladesh, said the country's economy had grown rapidly over the last five years especially in the power and energy sectors.
"We are committed to help Bangladesh in the journey of becoming a middle-income country by 2021 and we are exploring all paths to develop the strategy of joint cooperation," Das said at the event

ICC CWC 2019 NZ vs BAN preview: Confident Bangladesh take on clinical Kiwis

Not only was it a win for Bangladesh but a piece of history in making when they pulled off a memorable triumph over the more celebrated South Africa cricket team in their first match of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Now, when Bangladesh take on a disciplined Kane Williamson-led New Zealand team on Wednesday (June 5) at the Kennington Oval on Wednesday, they would do so with the confidence that they can upset anyone’s applecart, even in a World Cup fixture.
CHECK MATCH 8 (IND vs SA) LIVE SCORE, TOSS UPDATES and MATCH COMMENTARY HERE
A fast-improving Bangladesh side, led by Mashrafe Mortaza, had come into this World Cup as a low-key side usually failing to match the hype around their resurgence. But they underlined their potential in their fine 21-run victory at The Oval over the Proteas.
Though Bangladesh were a bit sloppy in the field and that might have cost them the match if it had not been for a disastrous batting by South Africa. On the other hand, the performance of New Zealand in their previous match was quite clinical. They dominated Sri Lanka with the bowl and when they came out to chase a below-par total, they made sure they did it without losing a wicket. So, for coming match between New Zealand and Bangladesh, the equation for both the teams very interesting — Bangladesh are riding high on confidence, and New Zealand are entering the match with the attitude of a superior team.
Bangladesh team news
Bangladesh made 330-6 — their highest one-day total — with Mushfiqur Rahim scoring 78 and Shakib Al Hasan 75 before a passionate crowd strongly in their favour.
Chasing the daunting total, South Africa never really looked in a position to win, as Bangladesh spinners remained economical and pacers disciplined.
Previously, Bangladesh had won a tri-series against West Indies and Ireland before the World Cup, and they have even had series wins against India and Pakistan since the last World Cup.
New Zealand team news
New Zealand have their task cut out and will know that their match against Bangladesh will be a far sterner test than the one against Sri Lanka which they won quite easily.
The Kiwis' superb bowling display saw them bundling out the Lankans for just 136 in 29.2 overs, with Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson bagging three wickets each.
Chasing the paltry target, the Black Caps were never in any sort of a trouble; Martin Guptill (73 not out) and Colin Munro (58 not out) went about their job with little fuss.

Private power companies object to NTPC's sale of power in Bangladesh

Private power generating companies have objected to the sale of power by NTPC to neighbouring Bangladesh. The companies have argued that domestic coal supply via long-term agreement cannot be used to supply power to other countries.
In a letter to the secretary, Ministry of Power, the representative body of private power companies, Association of Power Producers (APP), has said that the bid called by Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has specifically asked if the power supplied from India has the government's consent to use domestic coal.

“The access to Linkage Coal (at the notified price), supplied under FSAs/Coal supply agreements, and from captive coal mines, can only be utilised for Long Term/ Medium Term PPAs with discoms. This means that any bidder securing BPDB bid based on Domestic Linkage Coal/captive coal would lock in part of Domestic Coal resources for external consumption for 13 years, thereby hampering domestic consumer interests, and would be violative of the extant policy framework,” said the letter.
BPDB called bids for supplying 300 MW power from India. NTPC, the largest thermal power producer, won the bid beating three players namely Adani Power, Semcorp and PTC. NTPC would supply power through its power trading arm NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN).
The letter has urged the power ministry to clarify that the coal supplied under domestic linkage or coal from captive mines given to the power sector cannot be utilised for BPDB long-term tender.
“Cross-Border supply of power should be from e-auction/ imported coal only. An undertaking from bidders may be made part of the bid, saying that they will not use domestic linkage/ captive coal for such cross-border supply of power,” said the letter.
This comes at a time when the private players have complained that coal supply to them is significantly lower than what goes to NTPC. Also, they have reported slow coal supply under the new scheme SHAKTI which aims at a new methodology for supplying coal at optimal cost.
