The Digital Communication Commission, the apex decision-making body of the telecom department, is likely to take up the issue of data security and ownership in its meeting scheduled for today. The South Western Railway said that the first 'Kisan Rail' from Karnataka, between Bengaluru and Delhi, will run from today to October 19. The decision to operate the train was in line with the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's announcement in the 2020-21 budget to build a seamless national cold supply chain for perishables, inclusive of milk, meat and fish.

The State Legal Services Authority (SLSA), West Bengal, will organise its first e-Lok Adalat today, Registrar General of Calcutta High Court Rai Chatterjee said. Around 20,000 cases are expected to be heard in a day by benches set across the state.

IPL 2019 scheduling may spell disaster for broadcaster, franchises

The annual T-20 extravaganza, the Indian Premier League, is a marquee event not just for players and followers of the game, but also for most advertisers to boost visibility for and at times, sales of their products and services. The tournament has been used as a launch pad for many a brand. However, a lot of the success brands see with their campaigns on the IPL hinges on the fact that it is a domestic tournament, taking place across the country.
With the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) being hit with a double whammy in terms of scheduling the 2019 edition of the tournament, there are concerns on the advertising billing from the IPL this time. With the ICC Cricket World Cup set to take place from May 30 to July 14 in England and Wales in 2019, the IPL will have to take place earlier than its usual April-May window. On the other hand, an earlier IPL would clash with the general elections slotted to take place next year.
The IPL has, in the past, partially or fully shifted to an overseas venue when elections have coincided with its schedule. In 2009, it was held in South Africa and more recently, in 2014, it was partially shifted to the UAE. This, in turn, gives rise to a variety of issues for different participants in the IPL eco-system.
For one, franchise owners incur a higher cost of team maintenance when the tournament travels abroad. “While some franchises have partnerships and associations which help reduce the cost of travel and stay, the fact remains that cost increase when the tournament travels overseas. The BCCI may or may not compensate the franchises in part,” says an executive with a franchise.
Perhaps the broadcaster, Star India, faces the biggest threat, since advertising revenues may take a hit. “The biggest issue will be the timings. If it’s UAE, then it’s not a big lag. But South Africa could mean that the usual 4 pm and 8 pm slots for the matches may not be possible. Advertisers may not want to pay big bucks for spots on the IPL if the matches are not at prime time in India,” says a planner.
In 2014, when the IPL partially took place in the UAE, the then broadcaster Sony Pictures Network India (SPN) did manage to make the expected Rs 9 billion in advertising revenues from the tournament. Media reports suggest that the advertisers are in agreement with the broadcaster (Star India) to hold the IPL in India. However, the decision may not be in the hands of anyone associated with the IPL, as is evident from the events of the two previous elections.
Planners say it is too early to say predict what kind of impact IPL’s shift to an overseas location would have on Star India’s ad-revenues. In 2018, the broadcaster, who pays the BCCI approximately Rs 32 billion annually for the media rights, made an estimated Rs 30 billion through the telecast of the IPL.

Match preview
These two southern rivals last met in Qualifier 1 on May 22, in which CSK, champions in 2010 and 2011, just managed to emerge victorious in a low-scoring thriller, after crumbling in the middle overs during the run chase. SRH prevailed over Kolkata Knight Riders with a margin of just 14 runs at Eden Gardens in Qualifier 2 to seal a place in the coveted final.
Who has an edge in the CSK vs SRH IPL final 2018?
In the three encounters that the two finalists have had in IPL 2018, Chennai Super Kings won all three matches. The much awaited IPL 2018 final today will typically be a clash between SRH’s bowling and CSK’s batting. With the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rashid Khan and Siddarth Kaul, Sunrisers Hyderabad boasts of a superb bowling attack whereas the CSK has a star-studded batting line-up consisting of Shane Watson, skipper Dhoni, Ambati Rayudu, Suresh Raina and others. For Chennai Super Kings, each of these batsman had risen to the occasion whenever they were needed.
ALSO READ: IPL 2018 final: How Hyderabad's sun rose and Chennai became Super Kings
CSK have been on a roll ever since they made a comeback to the IPL fold after serving a two-year-ban. They have rarely lost momentum in the current series, with the old guards and new sensations firing in unison. In their final league game at their adopted home ground in Pune, Chennai Super Kings rode on Suresh Raina's gutsy half century to romp home by five wickets. Later, in the Qualifier-1, a match where most of the CSK batsmen got out cheaply against SRH, opener Faf du Plessis smashed a match-winning half-century to help Chennai reach their seventh IPL final. Ambati Rayudu, the other opener in Chennai's side, has been the standout performer with 586 runs and also performed well in the middle order. Australian Shane Watson has also been in top form, accumulating 438 runs from 13 matches, while Raina, skipper Dhoni and all-rounder Deepak Chahar have been the backbone of CSK's middle order.
In the bowling front, former two-time champions Chennai Super Kings will bank on young South African Lungi Ngidi, who has six wickets from 10 games with a decent economy rate of 5.90. With Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar and Dwayne Bravo doing their bit on the pace bowling front, CSK will lean on veteran Harbhajan Singh's spearheading the spin attack with left-armer Ravindra Jadeja in the middle overs.
On the other hand, Sunrisers Hyderabad are mostly bank on their bowling, which has a lot of variety and some of the best names in the business. Afghan spinner Rashid Khan has been brilliant throughout the season, bagging 21 wickets from 16 games. The leggie came up with a sensational figure of 3/19 against KKR in Qualifier 2, apart from a quick-fire cameo of 34 off just 10 balls. Rashid had also troubled Chennai in the first qualifier with figures of 2/11. In the batting front, Orange cap holder in IPL 2018, Kane Williamson has led from the front. The New Zealand skipper, rated as one of the best batters of the current generation, has so far amassed 688 runs in 16 games at an average of 52.92. Williamson has also led admirably on the field.
Opener Shikhar Dhawan has also been good, amassing 471 runs from 15 games and Hyderabad's opening will mostly rely on him. The middle-order however, looks a bit shaky and needs to find its touch for one last time in IPL 2018 as Manish Pandey, Wriddhiman Saha, Shakib Al Hasan and Yusuf Pathan have failed to live up to expectations. It will also be interesting to see whether Yusuf Pathan gets a chance in the playing 11 in the mega final, as the Baroda right-hander has failed miserably in IPL 2018, with just 215 runs from 15 games.
Overall, it could be another edge-of-the-seat match on a Super Sunday for fans, when the two best teams of IPL 2018 square off one final time.
Here are a few things to know about the Chennai Super Kings vs Sunrisers Hyderabad (CSK vs SRH) match (IPL final 2018) to be played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the two teams' players who could prove handy, and who has said what before the clash:
Who will win IPL final 2018 between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad (CSK vs SRH)? On the eve of the high-octane Indian Premier League (IPL) final between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), the M.S Dhoni-led yellow brigade have been voted as the strong favourites by a sports fans survey to win their third title at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. According to the survey conducted by Indian Sports Fan, an online largest sports fan community, CSK are the favourites to win the title while skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the most favourite player with the Wankhede as the most preferred stadium. The fans survey highlighted Dhoni as the most revered player out of the top 12 players with 27.3 per cent votes followed by Virat Kohli with 22 per cent and SRH captain Kane Williamson with 20.11 per cent fan votes. The survey further revealed that Mumbai's iconic Wankhede Stadium as the most preferred stadium with 30 per cent votes followed by Kolkata's Eden Gardens Stadium with 20.22 per cent votes, as compared to eight other stadiums. The survey targeted 14,000 fans across 10 cities with 4,802 successful respondents.
What Dhoni said ahead of IPL 2018 final and about Indian fast bowler Deepak Chahar: Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said that the consistency of the Indian fast bowlers was one of the big positives IPL 2018. "I think every season of IPL has produced very good Indian domestic players, who have come up and have done well for their respective teams," Dhoni said before today's final against Sunrisers Hyderabad. While Dhoni's side has young pacers like Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar, who have performed exceptionally well, others young seamers like Shivam Mavi, Prasidh Krishna too made a mark. "What is slightly different is that this season, we have seen a lot of Indian fast bowlers coming in (and) playing consistently and they have executed very well. So that is a big positive for Indian cricket.
What SRH head coach Tom Moody said ahead of IPL final 2018: Sunrisers Hyderabad lost to Chennai Super Kings in the IPL Qualfier 1 just a few days back but their head coach Tom Moody said that his side would not think of the past match but focus on their brand of cricket in today's summit clash. "I am not looking here at what we need to tighten up. We need to concentrate on our brand of cricket and bring that to the final," said Moody at the media conference today ahead of the final match at the Wankhede Stadium. "We all can recall the last game we played which we could have won by 20 runs. It was a remarkable comeback by CSK. Faf du Plessis played a remarkable innings and showed his class and experience," the former Australia cricketer said.
Rashid Khan is the player to watch in IPL final: The Indian Premier League 2018 will end on Sunday with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) meeting for the fourth time in the highly popular Twenty20 league in IPL 2018. CSK beat SRH in all their three meetings, both the league games as well as in the first qualifier, even though the Hyderabad team topped the league standings after each of the eight teams played 14 matches. After watching Rashid Khan mesmerise the KKR, not only his team SRH but everyone will be looking at him to take the final to greater heights. He is the IPL star of this season. Both the teams are owned by corporates from Chennai, CSK by a cement giant and the Hyderabad-based Sunrisers by an electronic media moghul, who runs a variety of television channels in all South Indian languages and radio stations. Unlike some other franchises, the owners of the two teams are not visible, CSK after the match-fixing scandal involving one its co-owners, leading to to its suspension for two years. When the two meet in the final at the Wankhede Stadium, it would be a second time in a week, having also played the first qualifier there. The two best teams will be playing the final, SRH's four successive losses before playing KKR on Friday night notwithstanding. CLICK HERE FOR MORE
IPL hinders players' growth in first-class cricket, says Andy Flower: England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) stand-in director Andy Flower says participation in the Indian Premier League hinders many "growth opportunities" for the country's players in first-class cricket. As many as 12 England players, including Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes and Jos Buttler, featured in this year's IPL. "The ECB position, at the moment, is to allow some of our best players to go to the IPL. And a lot of people will say things have thankfully moved on from the time I made my decisions around subjects like the IPL," Flower was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo. When he was the England coach, Flower was often sceptical of English players' participation in the IPL at the expense of their performance in Test cricket, which put him at loggerheads with stars such as Kevin Pietersen.
Eden Gardens, best ground of IPL 2018: Kolkata Knight Riders may have lost in the final race but its home venue, the hallowed Eden Gardens, was voted as the best ground in IPL 2018. In a tweet, former India captain Sourav Ganguly revealed this ahead of the official BCCI announcement on Sunday and also thanked the ground staff for their contribution. "The CAB is happy to inform that Eden Gardens has once again been awarded the best venue and ground of IPL 2018," the Cricket Association of Bengal president wrote on his official Twitter handle. This season, Eden Gardens went on to host nine matches of IPL 2018 after getting two bonus matches in the playoffs which were originally slated in Pune.
How Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings were related with Gavaskar led Indian cricket team in World Championship: Sunil Gavaskar's 1985 book, 'One Day Wonders' based on India's World Championship of Cricket triumph, had an interesting anecdote. Skipper Gavaskar himself, Mohinder Amarnath and Madan Lal were three players above 30 in the playing XI during that tournament in Australia. Whenever one among the three would take a smart catch, field well or get a direct throw right, the others would come and say "Well done OT". 'OT', according to Gavaskar, was the short form of 'Over Thirty' -- a bit of self deprecating humour to let people know that 'Age indeed is just a number'. Mahendra Singh Dhoni surely doesn't have any fancy terms reserved for his bunch of veterans but indeed his 'OTs' have done him proud as Chennai Super Kings gear up for their seventh Indian Premier League final. He has successfully created "chaos in the opposition ranks" with his 'out of the box' thinking and made the difficult cricketers "fall in line with team culture" to create a cohesive unit. The average age of the core team comprising Dhoni (36), Ambati Rayudu (32), Suresh Raina (31), Dwayne Bravo (34), Shane Watson (37) and Harbhajan Singh (37) is 34 and half years. Yet they are a complete antithesis to what everyone terms as 'Dad's Army'. But what has been the recipe of CSK's success despite having to start from scratch after a two-year ban?

Mumbai Indians innings analysis at the end of innings
Put in to bat first after losing the toss, Mumbai Indian’s captain Rohit Sharma looked a bit dodgy in the first over of the match as Sandeep Sharma started his first over with pitch-perfect delivery. Rohit got a leading edge of the third ball of the first over but Deepak Hooda dropped the skier. Rohit only able to score 1 run in the first over of the game. In the second over Rohit Sharma deposited Stanlake’s second ball into the stand and 4th ball for four before getting out of the last ball of the over. Rohit failed second time as he scored 11 runs off 10 balls. Evin Lewis unleashed the calypso music onto SRH’s bowler as he hit a massive six over the fine leg, Ishan Kishan, who came to bat after the Rohit’s wicket, joined Lewis as both collected 17 runs of the 3rd over the inning.
Lewis continued his destructive batting in the 4th over as he collected 15 runs of Stanlake’s 2nd over and hit one four and one flat six over the mid off. Kane Williamson asked his lethal weapon, Rashid Khan, to stop the run flow and Rashid did so. While trying to break the shackles, Kishan got a top edge but Sandeep Sharma dropped the catch. But Ishan Kishan failed to convert the lifeline into a big inning and got perished. The ball took the top edge and Yusuf Pathan took a good catch at third man boundary. After the Kishan wickets, Evin Lewis thrashed Kaul for the four over mid-off and it seems that he was unstoppable but Kaul delivered for Sunrisers Hyderabad and end the powerplay in a positive note as he took the prized wicket of Evin Lewis. The Mumbai Indians southpaw opener Lewis scored 29 runs off 17 balls with a strike rate of 170.58
After a brilliant 6th over in which Siddharth Kaul gave only 6 runs and took 2 wickets, Shakib gave away only one run in his first over. In the 8th over Sandeep Sharma gave away only 4 runs as Krunal Pandya and Surya Kumar Yadav failed to increase the run rate. In the 9th over, Krunal Pandya played some chicky shot as he manages to score 13 runs in the first 4 balls of Shakib’s over before getting out of the 5th ball of the over. It's a soft dismissal as he scoped the ball in the air and Williamson took an easy catch at short cover. Krunal scored 15 runs in 10 balls. At the end of 9 over Mumbai was reeling at 72 for 4, with Surya Kumar Yadav and Kieron Pollard on the crease.
Stanlake came to bowl the 10th over of the inning and gave 6 runs, Pollard is looking uncomfortable against him as he was beaten by Stanlake’s successive deliveries. After the halfway mark, Mumbai Indians were at 78 for 4. Rashid Khan who came to bowl the 11th over of the innings bowled 4 dot balls before getting hit for a four over his head. Pollard who took a maximum strike in last two overlooking rusty as he was not able to get the ball onto the bat. The most successful bowler of SRH till now came to bowl the 12th over and managed to keep the run rate in check as he gave away only 1 run in first 5 balls before getting hit for a four in the third man region. At the end of the 12th over, Mumbai managed to score only 87 runs for 4 wickets at run rate of 7.25
Sunrisers Hyderabad bowler keeping the run rate in check as they bowled tight line and length. Mumbai Indians also playing a risk-free cricket as they are trying to rebuild the inning. In the Rashid Khan’s 3rd over both Yadav and Pollard looked clueless as they managed to score only 3 runs in the 13th over of the Mumbai’s inning. Shakib came to bowl the 14th over and hit for massive six over long off in the 3rd ball of the over. Pollard greeted Stanlake with a six over his head as he came to bowl his final over. The Pollard took responsibility to accelerate the run rate as he managed to score 10 runs but got perished in a bizzare way of the 2nd last ball of the StanLake’s over. Pollard scored 28 runs off 23 balls with a strike rate of 121.73. Ben Cutting came to crease after Pollard’s wicket.
After the prized wicket of Pollard, Surya Kumar Yadav took the responsibility to increase the run-rate. He struck 2nd ball of the Shakib’s final over for a six over long off and collected 10 runs of his 4th over. Siddharth Kaul, most successful SRH till now, came to bowl 17th over of the inning giving away only 7 runs. In his 3 overs Kaul gave away only 19 runs and took two important wickets. Rashid Khan who came to bowl his 4th over gave away only 8 runs in his 3 overs with 14 dot balls. In his 4th over, after hitting for a four on 2nd delivery, he got the wicket of Cutting’s wicket. In his full quota of overs he gave away only 13 runs with 1 wicket. He made a record of bowling maximum dot balls in the IPL 2018.
In the 18th over, Sandeep Sharma took two wickets in two balls to diminish the MI’s any hope of some acceleration in the last 2 overs. He got rid of Surya Kumar Yadav and Pradeep Sangwan. In his 4 overs, he gave away only 25 runs and took 2 wickets. Siddharth Kaul came to bowl the last over of Mumbai Indian’s innings and gave 5 runs in first 5 balls before getting hit for the four in the last ball of the innings. Mumbai didn’t manage to cross 150 runs mark as the scoreboard says its 147 for 8.
Here are a few things to look forward to in Match 7 of Vivo IPL 2018 between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad:
Sunrisers Hyderabad's batsmen who might make an impact in match 7 of Vivo IPL 2018: Shikhar Dhawan has been in remarkable form in limited overs cricket this year and the left-hander has scored 418 runs in nine T20 matches at an average of 52.25 with a strike rate of 146.15. They also have Kane Williamson who was consistent with bat and Manish Pandey will give strength to the middle order.
Mumbai Indian's batsmen who might make an impact in match 7 of Vivo IPL 2018: Coming to the visitors, Mumbai Indians has a star-studded team with skipper Rohit Sharma leading the list. MI has an explosive top-order, and they will need at least one of Rohit Sharma, Evin Lewis or Ishan Kishan to do plenty of damage with the bat. Besides Rohit, Evin Lewis, who has two T20 hundred against India, and the explosive Kieron Pollard would like to show their big-hitting prowess against SRH. Also, Krunal Pandya has become a crucial player in MI’s scheme of things and the elder of the Pandya brothers has now made crucial 40s in three consecutive innings – against KKR in the last season’s Qualifier 2, in the Final and in this season’s opener
Injury worry for Mumbai Indians as Pat Cummins ruled out of IPL 2018: In a major blow to Mumbai Indians, Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins has been ruled out of the remainder of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season due to a back issue. Confirming the news, Cricket Australia's Bupa Support Team Physiotherapist, David Beakley said that Cummins experienced some soreness in his back during his country's crushing 492-run win against South Africa in the fourth Test at the Wanderers. "Pat experienced some back soreness during the fourth Test in South Africa. Follow-up scans have confirmed that he has bone oedema in his vertebrae," cricket.com.au quoted Beakley, as saying.

IPL 2018: Don't yawn, there's cricketing excitement to look forward to

For a long time now, experts and audiences have argued about what the Indian Premier League (IPL) truly is. At inception, the IPL was an unprecedented show of power — a rousing blend of razzmatazz, entertainment, celebrity team owners, cheerleaders and some cricket. Over the years, the showiness has often smothered the cricket; on other occasions, the cricket has sparkled so much that the accoutrements have been made to look like useless ostentation.
Over the past 10 years, a decade during which it has oscillated uncomfortably between thrill and scandal, the IPL has shown it is much more than just a cricket tournament: it is a paradox that sparks hope and fuels cynicism in equal measure.
The 11th edition, however, has a distinctive feel to it. It feels almost like the tournament has finally managed to shake off the troubles that took centrestage in the past. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are back after serving a two-year suspension, and few are fussed about what got them the axe in the first place. In fact, in a cricketing sense, the feeling prevalent is similar to what we saw ahead of the first season: eight heavyweight teams battling for an enormous prize, unmindful of happenings beyond the cricket field. And with fresh rosters — well, almost — and the eight teams that first started out, few would disagree that the IPL has come full circle. Yes, Deccan Chargers and Shahid Afridi are missing, but they were arguably forgettable, anyway.
IPL 2018: Don't yawn, there's cricketing excitement to look forward to
Like most other things he chooses to involve himself in, Virat Kohli promises to be the theme of this year’s IPL, too. Our own tiny Indian cricket bubble has ensured that a nought in the IPL win column for Kohli is quickly taking the shape of something akin to the “Messi-hasn’t-won-a-World-Cup” status. There is little denying, though, that his preternatural success story would be incomplete without an IPL victory.
“Kohli is always motivated. But since he hasn’t won this before, I’m really interested in seeing what he comes up with,” says former India wicket-keeper Nayan Mongia.
The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) squad that he will lead out will make the Indian captain’s task a little easier. In Yuzvendra Chahal and teenager Washington Sundar, Kohli has two of India’s finest limited-overs spinners. Their significance is perhaps amplified by the relatively diminutive M Chinnaswamy Stadium, RCB’s home ground, where the ball travels an awful lot more than elsewhere due to its higher altitude. Also at Kohli’s disposal is young pacer Mohammed Siraj, who, despite a difficult start to his international career, has been tipped for a bright future. And Pawan Negi — if he finally chooses to do something noteworthy with his very evident talent — can provide his side with a balance that often helps swing T20 games.
“They have all the potential, but have come up just short in the past. That is my worry with them. All that can play on their minds,” feels former India coach Anshuman Gaekwad.
A team that hasn’t stumbled before the finish line in the past is CSK. Still built around Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja and Murali Vijay, the CSK side is now among the limited constants of the sporting world — Roger Federer’s timeless appeal and South Africa capitulating in a cricket World Cup semi-final are other notable mentions in this category. But unlike Federer, their passage to the latter stages of this year’s tourney may not be straightforward. For all of Vijay’s flair and velvety touch, CSK are devoid of firepower at the top, which essentially means an overdependence on Raina. Moreover, Jadeja and Kedar Jadhav, despite their quality, have played little limited-overs cricket of late. And in Bravo, Imran Tahir and Harbhajan Singh, CSK have three bowlers who clearly look over the hill.
“I still won’t write them off. Experience counts for a lot in T20s,” says Gaekwad. In their first season back, this IPL is crucial for CSK; it is even more critical for its leader. That Dhoni is no longer the feared ball-belter that helped him attain legendary status in the shorter formats is now an open secret. What will be most fascinating to see, however, is how Dhoni adapts his waning powers to the brutality of the modern T20 game. It will also be his first time captaining any team in almost two years.
“On a personal level, he doesn’t have anything to prove. But yes, he would like to perform well for his franchise; for the fans who adore him so much,” adds Gaekwad.

IPL 2018: Don't yawn, there's cricketing excitement to look forward to
The man suddenly being spoken about as Dhoni’s successor has had it much better of late. Dinesh Karthik may still be “studying at the varsity where Dhoni has been the topper for several years running now”, but his current form suggests otherwise. “I’m really excited about Karthik. He can finally reach that next level,” feels Mongia. At 32, it is about time.
Last month, Karthik smashed a last-ball six against Bangladesh to help India win a triangular T20 series that also involved Sri Lanka. Now, he is all set to skipper Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The captaincy, it’s safe to say, couldn’t have come at a better time. KKR, traditionally heavy hitters in the IPL, will be without Mitchell Starc, a major miss considering world-class fast bowlers in T20s are rare. The Aussie’s absence perhaps unlatches the door for Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Shivam Mavi, two stars of India’s Under-19 World Cup triumph in New Zealand earlier this year. “The batting will be the test. Robin Uthappa and Chris Lynn will have to step up. But KKR will be in the mix as usual,” says Mongia.
In keeping with the trend of first-time Indian captains, it is impossible to omit Ravichandran Ashwin from this discussion. The off-spinner, the archetypal thinking cricketer, was always destined for captaincy. Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) looks like a good start; the franchise has put together a powerhouse that will take serious beating. “RR bought the smartest, Punjab the biggest. They wanted the best players; money was not a problem. And they got that,” says Gaekwad.
Coached by Virender Sehwag, KXIP possess two of the country’s best young batsmen in Lokesh Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. Assisting Ashwin in the bowling department will be three seasoned pros in Mohit Sharma, Barinder Sran and Axar Patel. Their biggest asset, however, may well prove to be Marcus Stoinis, the Australian all-rounder who has been busy making a name for himself in T20 cricket.
IPL 2018: Don't yawn, there's cricketing excitement to look forward to
As for RR, their fortunes are likely to be determined by the trio of captain Ajinkya Rahane, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler. RR bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule feels that the bowlers will have to rally around Jaydev Unadkat, who was snapped up for Rs 115 million at the auction. “The others will have to contribute but he will be very important. And with the kind of domestic season he’s had, he can make a real impact,” he says. Interestingly, Unadkat’s performances for India ever since he fetched that huge sum have been largely unimpressive.
Mumbai Indians may well be the defending champions and Rohit Sharma’s side will be among the more fancied teams, but a first-time winner this season would do the IPL a great deal of good. Delhi Daredevils, with their insipid record in the tournament, are unlikely to offer us that treat. So maybe it’s KXIP’s time to take the lead. Either way, we’ll be content as long as the focus
remains on cricket.

At Rs 591 million per match, BCCI rights exceed IPL media rights fee

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) media rights are proving to be a windfall for the governing body for cricket in the country. The second day of the e-auction saw the per match fees for the BCCI media rights exceed the per match fees pledged by Star India for the Vivo Indian Premier League (IPL) for the 2018-22 period.
The latest bid in the BCCI media rights auction stands at RS 60.32 billion, which amounts to Rs 591 million per match. The IPL media rights, sold for Rs 163.5 billion across 300 matches amount to Rs 545 million per match. This is a huge premium over what Star India was paying for the BCCI rights so far at Rs 430 million per match.

With no conclusive outcome by the end of the second day of bidding, the auction has been carried forward to Wednesday, April 5 when bidding will resume at 11 am. The day’s bidding started with Rs 45.17 billion and went up consistently to Rs 45.65 billion, Rs 54.88 billion, Rs 57.48 billion, Rs 60.01 billion, Rs 60.03 billion to finally end the day at Rs 60.32 billion.
Three companies – Star India, Sony Pictures Network India (SPN) and Reliance Jio are currently embroiled in an intense bid war for the coveted rights which include 102 international matches across 190 days in the 2018-23 cycle. The bidding started on April 3 which ended with a final bid of Rs 44.42 billion. This is the first time a sports property is using the e-auction process for its media rights sale. Under the rules of the auction process, while the involved parties can see the bids, but the identity of the bidders is kept under wraps till the conclusion of the process.
Three categories of rights have been put on sale by the BCCI – global television rights and rest of the world digital rights (GTVRD), digital rights for the Indian subcontinent alone (ID), and the global consolidated rights comprising worldwide TV and digital rights (GCR). As was the case with the Indian Premier League, if the globally consolidated bid exceeds the sum of the GTVRD and ID, then that bid wins. If not, the individual bids – India television+global digital and India digital rights will be deemed winners.
The base price for the 2018-19 season for the GTVRD is Rs 350 million crore, Rs 80 million for ID and Rs 430 million for the global consolidated rights. For the 2019-2023 tenure, the base price for GTVRD is Rs 330 million, for ID is Rs 70 million and Rs 400 million for GCR.
While six companies showed intent to bid, only the three currently involved in the bid process chose to bid actively. The three companies that did not enter the process were Google, Facebook and YuppTV.

IPL 2018: Rahane replaces Smith as RR captain; SRH awaits probe on Warner

In the aftermath of the recent ball-tampering controversy which forced Australia skipper Steve Smith to step down, his IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals on Monday also stripped Smith of the captaincy and named Ajinkya Rahane to lead the side in the upcoming Indian Premier League.
The Rajasthan Royals, returning to the IPL fold after serving a two-year ban on charges of corruption, had on Sunday sought time to take a final call ahead of the start of the 11th edition of the cash-rich league.
The decision was on expected lines the moment Cricket Australia indicated that harsher penalty was on cards for Smith and Co for their role in an episode that has shaken Australian sporting fraternity.
"Steve believes given the current circumstances 'It's in the best interest of the Rajasthan Royals that he steps down as Captain so the team can get ready for the start of the IPL without the ongoing distractions.' He would like to extend his gratitude to the BCCI officials and all the fans in India for their constant support," Rajasthan Royals' head of cricket Zubin Bharucha was quoted as saying in a media release.
The incident in Cape Town has certainly disturbed the cricketing world. We have been in constant touch with the BCCI and taken their counsel. Furthermore, we have been in regular contact with Steve, he added.
Rajasthan Royals' mentor and former skipper Shane Warne was in Cape Town and it is understood that Warne must have also had a chat with the Australian captain.
What is ball tampering?
Ball tampering is the unlawful alteration of the surface or seam of a ball on the field to affect its motion when bowled.
Smith on Saturday admitted to masterminding a premeditated plan to indulge in ball-tampering, which, among others, prompted even Australia's prime minister to react and a long-retired captain to mull a comeback. Australia's Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull called the incident a "shocking disappointment", while Michael Clarke kept open the possibility of returning as the Australia cricket team's captain.
On the third day of the Cape Town Test on Saturday, television footage showed Smith's teammate Bancroft, 25, taking a yellow object (sandpaper to scruff up one side of the ball to aid reverse swing) out of his pocket while fielding in the post-lunch session and appearing to rub it on the ball before putting the material into his trousers in an attempt to hide it.
In more upsetting news for cricket fans down under, Australian cricket's day of shame ended on Sunday in a crushing 322-run defeat by South Africa on the fourth day of the third Test match at Newlands, Cape Town.
Steve Smith and David Warner's troubles might just be beginning, with the ball-tampering controversy hanging over their heads. Under Cricket Australia's code of behaviour, Smith and Warner could face punishment ranging up to a life ban for cheating, reported ESPNcricinfo.
The IPL starts on April 7 with Mumbai Indians facing Chennai Super Kings in Mumbai. Rajasthan Royals will launch their season with an away fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 9 followed by their first home game in Jaipur on April 11 where they will host Delhi Daredevils at Sawai Mansingh stadium.
Here are the top 10 developments in the Steve Smith ball-tampering controversy:
1) David Warner 'not allowed to play': David Warner has been axed for the final Test series between Australia and South Africa in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal, according to media reports.
This comes after Steve Smith has already banned for the fourth Test in Johannesburg. The pair had earlier been stripped of the captaincy and vice-captaincy during the controversial third Test match.
Cricket Australia may ban Steve Smith for one year and David Warner for six months. It will also decide whether Warner is the chief conspirator in the ball-tampering row or not as he was the team's primary ball manager in recent times. The official announcement is expected to come in the next 48 hours.
Sunrisers Hyderabad mentor VVS Laxman said the franchise would wait for Cricket Australia's decision on the player, who finds himself embroiled in a ball-tampering controversy.
"It's very unfortunate what has happened in the Cape Town Test. As far as Sunrisers is concerned, it's too early for us to comment. Because, it was, just which has happened day before yesterday. We will wait for decision of Cricket Australia," Laxman said.
2) Steve Smith steps down as Rajasthan Royals captain: Steve Smith today decided to step down from Rajasthan Royals' captaincy in the wake of the of severe backlash he has faced after admitting to ball tampering during the third Test against South Africa.
The decision was on expected lines the moment Cricket Australia indicated that harsher penalty was on cards for Smith and Co for their role in an episode that has shaken Australian sporting fraternity.
"The incident in Cape Town has certainly disturbed the cricketing world. We have been in constant touch with the BCCI and taken their counsel. Furthermore, we have been in regular contact with Smith," Rajasthan Royals' head of cricket Zubin Bharucha.
"It's in the best interest of the Rajasthan Royals that Smith steps down as captain so the team can get ready for the start of the IPL without the ongoing distractions," he added.
3) Ajinkya Rahane replaces Steve Smith: Right-hand Indian batsman Ajinkya Rahane will replace Steve Smith in the upcoming season of the IPL. "Ajinkya Rahane has been an integral part of the Royals family for a long time now and he understands the culture and values of our team. We have absolutely no doubt that he will be a great leader of the Rajasthan Royals," said Zubin Bharucha.
Welcoming Rahane as the captain of the team, Ranjit Barthakur, executive Chairman, Rajasthan Royals, said: "Ajinkya Rahane has stepped up as a leader whenever he has been given the opportunity, be it for India or at Rajasthan Royals."
"We consider him the right candidate to lead the side this crucial season when the team is coming back to the IPL after two years. We wish him all the best.
"Governance and security are the prime policies that we as a franchise have taken into consideration and hence Rajasthan Royals' management is working towards deploying the best of governing and security methodologies to deliver the very best for the game of cricket in Jaipur," added Barthakur.

Co-owner Manoj Badale said: "Rajasthan Royals will do everything possible to protect the values and the integrity of the game. We agree with Steve's decision to step down as captain, and we are fortunate to have such a capable successor with Ajinkya Rahane. It is important that all cricket fans retain a balanced perspective on the situation.
"What happened in South Africa was clearly wrong, especially given that it appears to have been pre-meditated. That said, this will be a difficult time for Steve as well, given how much he cares about the game. said Manoj Badale, the co-owner of Rajasthan Royals.
4) Ashish Nehra sad over Steve Smith ball tampering: Former India fast bowler Ashish Nehra concedes that Steve Smith was wrong in orchestrating ball-tampering but it will be sad if the under-fire Australian captain is barred from participating in IPL 2018.
"I know what they did was wrong. But if we think that this is the first time that ball tampering is happening, then that is also wrong. But the best part is they admitted their mistake and ICC has sanctioned them. Obviously, we don't know what Cricket Australia will do but if they don't play, it will be a huge setback for Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad. They are quality players and it will be sad if they miss out on IPL," Nehra said, according to news agency PTI.
"You have to give them [Smith and David Warner] credit that they accepted to ball-tampering and stood down from captaincy and vice-captaincy," the left-arm pacer added.

Life ban will be really harsh for them. Not just for them, but for any player. You have to give them credit that they admitted their mistake. I think to step down from the captaincy & one test match ban is enough for both the players: Ashish Nehra #BallTampering #Australia

When asked whether bowlers should get some leeway as the reverse swing is a difficult art, he gave an inimitable reply.
"Yes, it's an art but then stealing is also an art. Would you put a thief in jail or praise him. Reverse swing is an art but ball tampering is dishonesty. And there are ways to prepare a ball for reverse swing without tampering," Nehra, who is one of India's finest exponents of swing bowling, said.
"Also this is a phenomena, you will find mainly in Test cricket as in T20 and ODIs, it's difficult to reverse the white ball. In ODIs, two new white balls are used, so chances are really less. It's only in Test cricket which is played for a considerable amount of time that teams want their bowlers to try reverse swing.
"Now conditions also play a huge role in reverse swing. If conditions are dry and pitch abrasive, the ball will in any case reverse. For example at the Feroz Shah Kotla, even a Ranji team will get the SG Test to reverse within 10 overs," Nehra explained.
5) Steve Smith steps down as Australian cricket team's captain: Caught up in the ball-tampering controversy, Steven Smith stepped down as the Australian cricket team's captain for the remainder of the ongoing third Test against South Africa.
The actions of the Australian team's leadership in the ball-tampering controversy would be investigated, said Cricket Australia. Subsequently, the Australian government asked the board to remove Smith as captain. Australian Prime Minister Turnbull called the incident a "shocking disappointment".
"It seemed completely beyond belief that the Australian cricket team had been involved in cheating," he said.
After he owned up to the ball-tampering conspiracy in South Africa, the ICC slapped Smith with a one-match suspension and fined his entire match fee. "ICC chief executive David Richardson laid the charge against Smith under to Article 2.2.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for players and player support personnel which prohibits 'all types of conduct of a serious nature that is contrary to the spirit of the game'," the ICC said in a statement.
"Smith accepted the charge and the proposed sanction of two suspension points which equates to a ban for the next Test match and which will see four demerit points added to his record," added the statement.

6) David Warner also steps down: On the back of the ongoing ball-tampering controversy, Smith's deputy David Warner also stepped down as vice-captain. Wicketkeeper Tim Paine acted as captain at Newlands, with both Smith and Warner taking the field on Sunday.
"Following discussions with Steve Smith and David Warner, they have agreed to stand down as captain and vice-captain, respectively, for the remainder of this Test match," said Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland, adding, "This Test match needs to proceed, and in the interim, we will continue to investigate this matter with the urgency that it demands."
"As I said earlier today, Cricket Australia and Australian cricket fans expect certain standards of conduct from cricketers representing our country, and on this occasion, these standards have not been met," he added.

7) Australian media slams cricket team: Australia's cricketers have heaped disgrace and humiliation on the country, the local press said on Monday in blasting the "rotten" team culture under the current leadership.
Cricket is considered the national sport in Australia and the stunning developments have not gone down well.
"Smith's Shame," screamed The Australian broadsheet on its front page, in remarks echoed by other media.
"The cheating has hurt Australian cricket from helmet to boot," it said in a commentary calling for Cricket Australia chief James Sutherland to stand down.
"In charge of the game for nearly two decades, Sutherland has done little to change the rotten culture of the sport at its most senior level."
It added that the scandal had dumped "disgrace and humiliation" on the nation.
In the same theme, the newspaper's cricket writer Peter Lalor asked: "Where were the adults in the room?
"The answer to the question is, sadly, that these are the adults. Or the nearest thing to them that the game can summon."
Television footage showed Smith's teammate Cameron Bancroft taking a yellow object out of his pocket while fielding in the post-lunch session on Saturday and appearing to rub it on the ball.

8) Bancroft fined 75% of his match fee: Australia's Cameron Bancroft has been fined 75 per cent of his match fee and handed three demerit points for breaching Level 2 of the ICC code of conduct. The ball-tampering controversy erupted after Television footage showed Bancroft rubbing the ball and then seemingly putting an object back in his pocket.
9) Harbhajan Singh accuses ICC of discrimination: Spinner Harbhajan Singh took to Twitter to react to the ball-tampering controversy, alleging discrimination on part of the ICC. Singh pointed out that there was no ban for Bancroft "with all the evidences", whereas six Indian players were "banned for excessive appealing in South Africa in 2001 without any evidence".
The 'Turbanator' also called out "Sydney 2008", saying that while he was "not found guilty", he was banned for three matches. "Different people, different rules," said Singh.

10) The ball-tampering controversy, as it happened: Australia's Cameron Bancroft was caught on cameras using what is believed to be a tape before attempting to hide the object down the front of his pants, moments before the umpires seemingly inquired about the contents of his pockets on the third day of the Cape Town Test on Saturday. Television footage later showed Bancroft rubbing the ball and then seemingly putting an object back in his pocket.
As soon as the incident was shown on the giant screen, the player was questioned in the presence of his captain Steve Smith by the two on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Nigel Llong. The on-field officials along with third umpire Ian Gould and fourth umpire Allahudien Palekar later charged Bancroft.
The umpires inspected the ball at that time and elected not to replace the ball and award a five-run penalty as they could not see any marks on the ball that suggested that its condition had been changed as a direct result of Bancroft's actions.
Smith and Bancroft admitted to the offence after play on the day, and Bancroft was charged by the ICC for altering the condition of the ball.
A contrite Smith and Bancroft later addressed a press conference, admitting to ball-tampering and apologised for their actions.
However, the uninitiated might ask what is ball tampering in the first place? In cricket, ball tampering refers to an action in which a player illegally alters the condition of the ball. Ball tampering's primary motivation is to interfere with the aerodynamics of the ball.
Australia's day ends in 322-run rout: In more bad news for Australian cricketing fans after the ball-tampering controversy, Australian cricket's day of shame ended in a crushing 322-run defeat by South Africa on the fourth day of the third Test at Newlands on Sunday.
The off-field issues affected Australia's on-field performance. Set an unlikely 430 to win, Australia were bowled out for a paltry 107. South Africa, for their part, rode on superb bowling by star pacer Morne Morkel, who took five wickets for 23 run, to claim a 322-run victory.

IPL 2018 player auction Day 2: Teams continue to stay away from big names

After some heavy-duty bidding for uncapped spinners, the eight IPL franchises went on the back foot when it came to bidding for capped batsmen. Of the ten available for bidding, only three found takers, all from India.
This meant players like Shaun Marsh, Lindl Simmons, Eoin Morgan, Alex Hales and Travis Head found no takers.
Saurabh Tiwary was picked up by Mumbai Indians for Rs 8 million after the team tussled with Kings XI Punjab for a short while. Mandeep Singh went to the Royal Challengers Bangalore for Rs 14 million. Delhi Daredevils and Kings XI Punjab were also bidders in this case but bowed out eventually.
Manoj Tiwary was picked up by Kings XI Punjab for Rs 10 million after a short back and forth bidding battle with Sunrisers Hyderabad.
10:05 am: Krishappa Gowtham was the first big buy of the second day of the IPL 2018 player auction at Rs 62 million. Gowtham, in particular, seemed to be very popular with the teams as four of them -- Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians, and Rajasthan Royals -- bid for him.
The Royals finally snapped him up.

That seems to have set the tone for the morning session as teams went hammer and tongs after the players they wanted. Shahbaz Nadeem and Gowtham found themselves at the centre of a bidding war involving multiple teams. Nadeem went to the Rajasthan Royals for Rs 62 million. Of the 10 uncapped spinners to go under the hammer, six found themselves without any suitors. However, the ones who did see interest saw intense bidding.
