But Ben Stokes' 79 has ensured the hosts finish strong.

ICC CWC 2019 IND vs AUS Preview: Can Kohli & co survive trial by pace?

India cricket team's campaign in the ICC cricket World Cup 2019 started a little late but is set to get intense as they take on defending champions Australia cricket team at the Oval in London on Sunday. The rivalry between the two teams is long and Australia have won 8 of the 11 World Cup clashes between the two sides. India would look to better its performance against Aussies now that they have a World's no. 1 bowler in Jasprit Bumrah and spinners who never shy away from attack. On top of that, India have a formidable batting line-up with World's no. batsmen in skipper Virat Kohli. Australia, on the other hand, have been on the path of recovery after the ball-tampering controversy due to which their key players Steve Smith and David Warner were banned for a year.

The defending champions put up a spendid show in World Cup 2019 after easing past Afghanistan on Warner's brilliant batting and then showed their mettle against West Indies who almost had the match in their hands.
India were clinical in their six-wicket victory against a depleted South Africa weith Yuzvendra Chahal picking four wickets and then Rohit Sharma scoring a century to take the team to victory.
India would be wary of Australia's strong pace attack, especially Mitchell Starc, who picked a 5-wicket haul against West Indies in their previous match. However, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni may not face much challenge from Aussie spinner Adam Zampa.

Australia's batting coach Ricky Ponting is likely to come out with a new strategy against India as he is well aware of the strength of the opponent.
How India will stop David Warner and Aaron Finch
India would have to chalk out a plan to get David Warner and Aaron Finch early and keeping the conditions at Oval in mind, Mohammed Shami, who was dropped from the playing 11 against South Africa, is likely to make a comeback in India's playing 11. In case India decide to retain both the wrist spinners and get Shami in the playing 11, then Bhuvneshwar is likely to be rested.
Indian spinners
And in case one of the two spinners is dropped, then Chahal, despite his four-wicket-haul might make way for Kuldeep, who has had better success rate against the Australians.
Kuldeep is expected to be more effective because of the bounce and dip that he gets apart from his stock delivery being the one that will leave the left-handers.
The other issue could be Kedar's place as his side-arm off-breaks may just not be as effective on an Oval pitch with true bounce, where batsmen can line him up for big hits.
Shikhar Dhawan's poor form a concern for India
The other issue will be Shikhar Dhawan's prolonged bad patch. Dhawan, an ICC event giant, is yet to fire since coming to England, failing in both warm-up games and the first game.
The movement off the pitch from back of length has created problems for the left-hander and possibly he will get a couple of more games before Rahul is brought up the order and Shankar slotted at number four.

ICC CWC 2019 IND vs SA preview: Will both Kuldeep, Chahal play against SA?

The first ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 match for the India cricket team will be momentous for skipper Virat Kohli for a number of reasons. Though this is his third World Cup as a player, the India vs South Africa match, to be played at Hampshire Bowl on Wednesday (June 5) will be the first World Cup game for Kohli as India’s captain. Backed by an able in-form team, Kohli will be carrying the weight of more than a billion fellow Indians’ hopes. Meanwhile South Africa will miss Dale Steyn in their playing 11 as he has been ruled out of the ICC CWC 2019. The Ageas Bowl pitch in Southampton is expected to be flat and South African batsmen's weakness against the slow bowlers would allow Indian team management to pick both Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal in India playing 11.

True, the present team has several players who could single-handedly turn any match on its head — the skipper himself leading the pack of such performers — but does it not miss the class of the 2011 winning side, and the street-smartness of Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the captain?
Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh, many would say, were a different league altogether. And then there was also the support starcast comprising Munaf Patel, Ashish Nehra, Suresh Raina and a young Virat Kohli.

Going by the track record, six wins in the nine forthcoming games to ensure a smooth passage to the semi-finals should not be a tall order.
Two years have been invested building a strong ODI squad. The process had started right after India’s loss to Pakistan in the 2017 Champions Trophy final.
The 'Men in Blue' have had adequate rest, too. While each of other teams has already played its first two games, India are raring to go and start their campaign with a commanding performance.
The first match in a tournament of such vast magnitude is always important and South Africa's confidence will be at its lowest following back-to-back defeats against England and Bangladesh.
ALSO READ: ICC CWC 2019: Things India should be wary of when they face South Africa
To make matters worse, fast bowler Lungi Ngidi is out with a hamstring strain, senior speedster Dale Steyn is still recovering from a shoulder injury, and Hashim Amla got a nasty hit on the helmet off Jofra Archer's short ball against England in the opening game.
Lungi Ngidi Lungi Ngidi. Photo: Reuters The clash couldn't possibly have been more well-timed, as India have a chance to hold the Proteas by the scruff of their neck when they are seemingly at their weakest. However, the wise say that a cornered opponent is always a dangerous one. Head coach Ravi Shastri, a shrewd tactician by all means, will be surely making his players aware of the consequences of taking their foot off the pedal.
India vs South Africa: Pitch and weather prediction
The pitch at the Ageas Bowl stadium in Southampton, without any grass cover, is expected to be a batting-friendly one, but Kohli will have a few points to ponder over, as the weather forecast on match day indicates a cloud cover with intermittent showers.
ALSO READ: ICC Cricket World Cup 2019: How India can exploit South Africa's weakness
These will be some of the pressing questions for skipper Kohli to address going into the first game.
There's no doubt that the Proteas are badly hit by poor form and injuries, but it may just take one fiery spell from Kagiso Rabada, for instance, to straighten things up. With a bit of help from weather conditions, Rabada’s scorching pace and ability to move the ball could just unsettle the opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, who haven't had the best of times in the past few months.
Kedar Jadhav and Rohit Sharma Kedar Jadhav and Rohit Sharma. Photo: AP | PTI K L Rahul is expected to take the number 4 slot, but it needs to be seen as to how well he performs when the conditions are nippy. Dhoni at number 5 will be expected to be the stabilising factor, and if he bats like he did in the warm-up match against Bangladesh, he could prove a nightmare for the Proteas attack.
ALSO READ: CWC 2019: Kuldeep, Chahal likely to start off, toss-up between Kedar, Vijay
But a bigger worry for South African skipper Faf du Plessis will be the batting department, where AB de Villiers' absence has surely had an impact. Proteas batsmen’s poor technique against slow bowlers has been exposed time and again and 20 overs of quality spin bowling might prove too hot for the South Africans to handle.
India cricket team news:
It will be interesting to see whether Virat Kohli will go in with both the spinners — Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal — or choose an extra pacer in Bhuvneshwar Kumar to strengthen their pace attack, led by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Shami.
However, given the inability of the South African batsmen to play against spinners, Kohli might be tempted to play 'Kul-cha'. Both Kuldeep and Chahal were extremely successful against the Proteas batsmen in the ODI series in South Africa last year which India had won. Kuldeep had scalped 17 wickets from six games while Chahal had only one less from an equal number of matches.

Less than 24 hours after their most ignominious defeat in a World Cup game — against Bangladesh, which they lost by 21 runs — South Africa bowling spearhead Dale Steyn, 35, and batsman Hashim Amla, 36, were at the Ageas Bowl with a couple of support staff members, for a 75-minute session under the scorching sun. The desperation was palpable on both fronts. The team is seeking direction from its two senior-most players who would not like their final World Cup to be a forgettable one.
Having travelled for a couple of hours from London in the morning, the two players walked in the afternoon as the sun shone brightly after playing hide and seek during the India net session. Since it was a suddenly organised session, no nets were put up when Amla batted for more than an hour while Steyn bowled for around 30 minutes.

ICC World Cup 2019, NZ vs SL Preview: Can Sri Lanka be written off?

In Match 3 of ICC World Cup 2019, Kane Williamson's New Zealand will face Sri Lanka at the Cardiff Wales Stadium on Saturday. The Black Caps reached the final four years ago for the first time after six semi-final defeats, but were defeated by Australia in Melbourne. Newly appointed captain Dimuth Karunaratne, who has returned to ODIs after four years, has been handed the responsibility of lifting a team that have lost eight of their past nine ODIs. Kane Williamson has replaced the swashbuckling Brendon McCullum as captain but the core of the team that came so close in 2015 remains. Since the last World Cup, New Zealand have risen as high as second in the world rankings but have also been beaten at home by South Africa, England and India.

The Kiwis start clear favourites in their opener against 1996 winners Sri Lanka, a side that has slumped to ninth in the ODI rankings and has been struggling to rise to the status they once held -- one of the most dominant sides in ODIs.
But Sri Lanka have an impressive World Cup record, with one title, two runners-up finishes and one semi-final appearance. The young side may hand some upsets and cannot be written off this early.

New Zealand Team News
New Zealand beat World Cup favourites India in their opening World Cup warm-up game before going down to the West Indies. The Black Caps were taken for plenty by the West Indies in their final warm-up match where they squandered 421 runs and eventually lost the match by 91 runs. However, they would take a lot of confidence from their first outing against India where they bundled out the Men in Blue for 179 before chasing down their total with six wickets to spare.
Ross Taylor has been in breathtaking form in recent years in the one-day game, averaging over 60 in ODIs in 2017 and more than 90 last year.
Williamson and Martin Guptill are the other dangermen in the New Zealand batting line-up while Trent Boult would leads the bowling attack with Colin de Grandhomme and Tim Southee for company. Spinners Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner would be handy for the the captain.

Sri Lanka Team News
Sri Lanka's tournament preparations have been not been ideal as they lost both of their warm-up fixtures against South Africa and Australia. If there was any positive for Sri Lanka in those two matches, it was the half centuries hit by newly appointed skipper Dimuth Karunaratne and the wise old head of Angelo Matthews.
The 1996 champions are in dire need of motivation and captain Karunaratne himself has to inspire the unit. The left-hander, who had scored his maiden test hundred against the Black Caps in 2014, could be the glue that holds the Sri Lankan batting together. He will have the support of veteran pacer Lasith Malinga who can instil confidence into the team, both with his bowling and experience.

France versus Croatia: The battle of economies has already been won

France and Croatia face off at the World Cup final on Sunday, an unexpected match-up that pairs one of the European Union’s founding nations against the bloc’s newest member.
On the route to the final, France scored 10 goals, conceded four, and held their opponents scoreless in four games. Croatia are ahead on goals, scoring 12, but they let in five and only kept two clean sheets. As the soccer analysts parse those numbers, let’s see how the countries stack up in other ways.
It’s still undecided who’s better at football, but in terms of the economic outlook over the next year, it’s pretty clear who’s winning.
ALSO READ: Fifa World Cup 2018 Belgium vs England: Hazard doubles lead! BEL 2 ENG 0
The question is: who’ll win the game? France has a better World Cup record and a bigger pool of young men from which to draw its team, but they’re slightly more partial to a tipple and aren’t as fit as their Croatian counterparts.
That said, the French are a happier bunch, ranking 23rd in the World Happiness Report, compared to Croatia’s 82nd place. Could a first ever World Cup victory for Croatia turn the tables?

France are the bookmakers’ favourite to win. A Goldman Sachs analysis also tips them, with a 63 per cent chance.
Before the tournament, the Goldman model (with 1 million simulations) predicted Brazil would be champions, which didn’t work out very well.
That said, it should be noted that their second pick at the time was France.
But this weekend is about the beautiful game, not the dismal science. Kick off is at 6 pm in Moscow on Sunday
