IPL 2019, KKR vs MI LIVE SCORE: Mumbai win toss; Kolkata to bat first

In today’s second match of VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL 2019), Dinesh Karthik’s Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will lock horns with Mumbai Indians (MI) led by Rohit Sharma at The Eden Gardens in Kolkata. With an enviable head-to-head record to back them, MI will look to cement their place in IPL playoffs by knocking KKR out of IPL 2019. Mumbai Indians are placed second in IPL points table 2019 with 14 points from 11 games. Their 46-run victory over table-toppers Chennai Super Kings helped them inch closer to a playoffs berth with three matches remaining. Incidentally, Mumbai will play KKR twice in the space of one week. The Rohit Sharma-led side have been KKR's nemesis ever since the IPL began, racking up a mammoth 18 wins to KKR's five in 23 meetings. While Mumbai have been in good form with skipper Rohit also finding his touch against MS Dhoni-less CSK with a match-winning 67. Dinesh Karthik's men lost six games in a row and are all but out of a playoff reckoning. A defeat on the morrow would ensure their early exit.

Key bowlers for KKR
KKR's poor pace bowling effort once again came to the fore as none of the pacers helped spinners Sunil Narine (2/25) and Piyush Chawla (3/20) who accounted for five wickets together and kept the run flow in check.

The decision to once again leave World Cup bound star India chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav also raised eyebrows as KKR stuck to pacer Prithvi Raj who, in the end, bowled just two overs going for 28 runs.

Rahul Chahar bowling style
Chahar is a yard or two quicker in the air than Warne. When asked about this pace difference, Chahar said that his coach asked him to bowl a little quicker as this would help him to get more wickets.
06:37 PM
Shane Warne is my idol, says Rahul Chahar
Mumbai Indians (MI) leg-spinner Rahul Chahar, who had a very good outing against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the match which his team won at the MA Chidambaram Stadium here on Friday night, regards legendary Australian cricketer Shane Warne as his idol.

It was the Mumbai bowlers, who came with a very good performance on a slow wicket to wrap up the home side, who were chasing a modest 156-run target, on a paltry 109 runs.

Lasith Malinga was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors with figures of 4/37, while Krunal Pandya and Hardik Pandya bagged couple of wickets each.

Besides, Chahar also bowled a wicketless yet very economical spell of 4-0-21-0 and contributed to his side's win. The leggie has so far picked 10 wickets in the eight matches he has played for the Mumbai-based franchise.

"My idol is Shane Warne. When I was eight years old, my coach used to bring DVDs of Warne and made me watch them. After watching those videos, I started bowling like him," said Chahar when asked about his role model at the post-match press conference.

Pacers outshine spinners in IPL 2019, rule chart
The spinners have generally dominated the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the past and fetched success for their respective teams. But in the ongoing 12th edition of the tournament, the story is slightly different.

In the 44 games played so far, 13 bowlers have taken 10 or more wickets. Among them, eight are pacers and only five spinners. Pace bowlers have accounted for 110 wickets among them and spinners 66.

Among the big wicket-takers this season, Delhi Capitals pacer Kasigo Rabada tops the chart with 23 wickets from 11 games. Aprt from him, pacers picking 10 or more wickets, include Chennai Super Kings' Deepak Chahar (15), Kings XI Punjab's Mohammed Shami (14), Mumbai Indians' Jaspreet Bumrah (13) and Lasith Malinga Mumbai (12), Delhi's Chris Morris (12), Rajasthan Royals Jofra Archer (11) and Sunrisers Hyderabad's Sandeep Sharma (10).

Among spinners with 10 or more wickets are: Chennai's leggie Imran Tahir (17), Royal Challengers Bangalore Yujvendra Chahal (14), Rajasthan Royals' Shreyas Gopal (13), Punjab's Ravichandran Ashwin (12) and Hyderabad's Rashid Khan (10).

The best bowling performance has also been registered by a fast bowler -- Mumbai's Aljari Joseph with 6/12 against Hyderabad. Moreover, this was also the best bowling figures in the IPL history.

Earlier, the record was held by Rasjasthan's Sohail Tanvir who took six Chennai wickets by conceding just 14 runs in the inaugural season of the league in 2008.

However, with still a number of matches left in the tournament and wickets at most venues getting slower, spinners still have the chance to re-establish their domination and figure on top of the wicket tally.

Russell on atmosphere in KKR’s camp
Russell said the atmosphere in the team is not healthy as he likes to keep himself confined to his room.

"We have to make sure that we have a good practice session, do whatever it takes, put our body on the line and make sure that we take KKR over the line for next three games.

"I find myself just been in my room for the last couple of days losing games after games. I'm not the type of guy to do the walking around... It's hard to do the walk around losing six games in a row.

"It's not healthy, to be honest. I'm feeling down at the moment but tomorrow when we cross the rope my energy level will be 150. As cricketers, we have to have the passion inside, and not just to show it on the TV."

Up against a side who boast of a strong pace attack comprising Lasith Malinga and Jasprit Bumrah, Russell said he never feared any bowlers.

"I have never feared any bowler. Never. Bowlers fear me, to be honest. I'm not bragging or anything. I can get out in one ball tomorrow or the first ball they bowl can go for six. I'm not afraid to get out.

"I'm not going to die. So, it's not the life and death situation. It's like you're giving yourself a chance to score runs they are trying to get you out. Bumrah, Malinga are top bowlers. But they are human beings."

KKR have the worst record against Mumbai Indians who have won eight matches in a 18-5 head-to-head record. The last time KKR had won against MI was four years ago.

Andre Russell on loss against Rajasthan Royals
The Jamaican who has amassed 406 runs from 10 innings at an outrageous strike rate of 209.27 was particularly pained at KKR's failure to defend 176 against a "weak" Rajasthan Royals.

"I'm disappointed that we get defeated by a team Rajasthan Royals with weak batting order. If we can't restrict a team for under 170 with our bowling attack then we will need miracles against a strong team like Mumbai.

"They said we have been struggling in batting. But the batting has not been struggling really. We are getting the totals that we should have defended.

"But when you bowl as bad as our bowlers, you don't really take catches -- we have been the worst fielding team so far."

Russell slams KKR's 'bad decisions'
Star KKR all-rounder Andre Russell on Saturday lamented the "bad decisions" taken by his team in a disappointing IPL campaign which has seen the side lose six games in a row.

Russell has been the biggest impact player for KKR with three man-of-the-match performances from their four wins but his team has let him down.

"We have a good team but if you make bad decisions then you will always lose games and that's what we've been doing. If we had enough time, I could pinpoint a few games where if we just looked to bowl tighter in areas or bring in right bowlers at the right time, we could have won," Russell said.

"As a professional cricketer, to be in this position is not the healthiest position. In terms of decision, we have been bowling wrongly at the wrong time, that's what been causing for us to keep losing in simple ways," Russell said on the eve of the game against Mumbai Indians.

Preview
In match 47 of the VIVO Indian Premier League 2019 (IPL 2019), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will host Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Eden Gardens on Sunday. Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians are on the second spot in the IPL 2019 points table, while Dinesh Karthik's KKR are at the seventh position. One win away from assuring their IPL playoffs berth, Mumbai Indians will look forward to taking on Kolkata Knight Riders -- against whom they have an eight-match winning streak in a 18-5 head-to-head record. The last time KKR had won against MI was four years ago. With three matches left in the league stage of IPL 2019, the two teams clash for the first time this season today, with the return leg slated for May 5. KKR are in the midst of a six-match losing streak and appeared to have lost the plot completely. However, the side would look to bounce back with a win.

In their previous match against Rajasthan Royals, Dinesh Karthik led from the front with a career-best 97 not out to set a challenging 176 target. However, their pacers came a cropper and the visitors secured a thrilling three-wicket win.

Starting at elimination, KKR would hope for their batting and bowling to click as a unit with just three matches to go.

At the moment nothing is going in favour of the Shah Rukh Khan-owned franchise, something that reminds of their disastrous show in 2009 when the team lost nine in a row, in a 10-match winless run.

This will be KKR's last home match of the season and the team will look to win it for the fans who have come in huge numbers and packed the stadium in every match.
