Lok Sabha election result live: Rahul has not resigned, clarifies Congress

Congress Working Committee meet underway. Photo: ANI
Election results 2019 LIVE: Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting is underway in New Delhi. After Congress party's abysmal defeat in the Lok Sabha polls, Congress President Rahul Gandhi offered to resign as Congress chief, taking moral responsibility of the defeat. His offer was turned down by the Congress leaders, according to sources.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his cabinet on Friday to discuss forming the next government after winning a big majority in the Lok Sabha elections.
Election Commission data showed the BJP had won more than 300 seats of the 542 seats up for grabs, giving it the first back-to-back majority in Lok Sabha for a single party since 1984.
Reuters quoting a government spokesman said Modi has not yet set an inauguration date for the new government, but BJP officials said he was expected to move quickly to put together a new cabinet.
BJP President Amit Shah is likely to get a key post when the new government takes oath next week. Given the challenges on the economic front, the concern in the BJP is if Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s health will permit him to join the ministry at the current juncture.

Stay tuned for Lok Sabha election results 2019 LIVE updates.

NPF petition seeking disqualification of its 7 MLAs is under Speaker's consideration
Nagaland Assembly Speaker Vikho-o Yhoshu said Friday the petition submitted by opposition Naga Peoples Front (NPF) seeking disqualification of its seven Legislators for indulging in anti-party activities is under his consideration.

Consultations with legal luminaries are being held and a decision on the matter as per the existing precedence and law would be pronounced very soon, Yhoshu told PTI on the sidelines of a function where he inaugurated Bar bridge at Mima village in Kohima district.

NPF had on April 25 last filed the disqualification petition against its 7 MLAs.

NPF, which has 26 MLAs in the State Assembly, had served show cause notice to the MLAs for openly declaring support to NDPP leader Toheho Yepthomi, a consensus candidate of the ruling Peoples Democratic Alliance (PDA), on the lone Lok Sabha seat in the state.

They had allegedly rejected the collective decision of the party to support Congress candidate K L Chishi in the poll.
