Coronavirus LIVE: India cases rise to 78,194; global cases at 4,429,883

Coronavirus India update: India's total number of coronavirus cases has reached 78,194 and 2,551 people have died from the Covid-19 infection so far, according to Worldometer data. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday announced stimulus measures to the tune of nearly Rs 5.94 trillion to provide relief to various constituents of the Indian economy. They are micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), taxpayers, non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), power distribution companies, the real estate sector, organised-sector employees, and contractors working with the government.
Coronavirus world update: Globally, 4,429,883 people have been infected by coronavirus as of today, and the total number of deaths from the disease now stands at 298,059.

Indian-origin engineer charged in US with over $10 million COVID-relief fraud
An Indian-origin engineer in the US has been charged with fraudulently seeking more than USD 10 million in loans under a coronavirus relief programme set up to help small businesses.

Shashank Rai, 30, allegedly sought millions of dollars in forgivable loans guaranteed by the Small Business Administration (SBA) under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act from two different banks by claiming to have 250 employees earning wages when, in fact, no employee worked for his alleged business.

China reports 15 new Covid-19 cases, Wuhan begins testing of its 11 million people
China has reported 15 new COVID-19 cases, including 12 asymptomatic infections, the health authorities said on Thursday, as the mass testing for the deadly coronavirus began for the 11 million people in the city of Wuhan, amid apprehensions about a second wave of the pandemic.

According to China's National Health Commission (NHC), the three new cases are domestically transmitted, with two reported in Liaoning province and one in Jilin province.

14 migrants killed, 50 injured in two separate bus accidents in MP and UP
Eight migrant workers were killed and nearly 50 others injured when the bus in which they were travelling collided with a truck near Guna town in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday morning, police said.

The accident took place between 3 am and 4 am when the victims were on their way to Uttar Pradesh border from Maharashtra, Cantt police station in-charge Madan Mohan Malviya said. The injured persons were rushed to a nearby district hospital. Read on...

Global trade fell 3% in Q1 of 2020 due to Covid-19; may slide further: UN
The coronavirus pandemic has led to a three per cent drop in global trade in the first quarter of 2020 and this downturn is expected to accelerate in the next quarter to project a whopping quarter-on-quarter decline of 27 per cent, the UN trade body has warned.

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) said in a report that the drop in global trade was accompanied by marked decreases in commodity prices, which have fallen precipitously since December last year. Read on...
