Coronavirus LIVE: India cases at 6,074,702; recovery rate rises to 82.58%

Coronavirus update: India on Sunday saw over 80,000 new Covid-19 cases, a notch less than the average daily additions since last month. Total caseload currently stands at 6,073,348. The country has added over 1,000 deaths daily for 28 days. Death toll now stands at 95,162. Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said that the findings of the soon-to-be-released second sero survey indicated that India was still far from achieving any kind of herd immunity. Warning against complacency, Vardhan said that the second sero survey findings make it necessary for everyone to follow Covid-appropriate behaviour.

Coronavirus vaccine update: Adar Poonawalla, the CEO of Serum Institute of India, which is conducting trials of Covid vaccine candidates ahead of mass production, took to Twitter to highlight challenges in vaccine production and distribution in the country. "Quick question: will the Government of India have 80,000 crores available over the next one year? Because that is what the Ministry of Health needs to buy and distribute the vaccine to everyone in India. This is the next concerning challenge we need to tackle," Poonawalla said.

World coronavirus update: The global tally of coronavirus cases stands at 33,303,209. While 24,634,061 have recovered, 1,002,383 have died so far. The US, the worst-hit country, has 7,321,343 cases. It is followed by India, which has 6,073,348 cases, Brazil (4,732,309) and Russia (1,151,438).

Covid-19: Aurangabad rural health staff to get GMCH training
The Government Medical College and Hospital in Maharashtra's Aurangabad will give seven days training to health staff in the district's rural areas to ensure better treatment for Covid-19 patients, its dean Dr Kanan Yelikar said on Monday.

The training of medical officers and nursing personnel in various protocols governing the outbreak will be carried out by the facility's microbiology department. GMCH, the premier medical facility in Aurangabad, is currently treating 347 COVID-19 patients, the condition of 232 of them being critical, an official said.

HC issues notice on Delhi govt's plea against stay on reserving ICU beds for Covid patients
The Delhi High Court on Monday issued a notice to all the respondents on a petition moved by the Delhi government challenging a stay on its order directing private hospitals to reserve 80 per cent beds for Covid patients.

A division bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan, while seeking responses from the main petitioner Association of Healthcare Providers (India) and others, refused to vacate the stay on the Delhi government's decision instructing private hospitals in the national capital to reserve 80 per cent of ICU beds for Covid-19 patients.

The bench, while posting the matter for October 9, said that those hospitals have complied with the Government of NCT Delhi order and expanded their bed capacity may voluntarily continue to comply.

Ladakh reports 10 fresh Covid-19 cases, one death
One more patient succumbed to coronavirus in Ladakh, taking the death toll to 58 in the Union Territory, while the infection tally reached 4,103 with 10 fresh cases, officials said on Monday. Fourteen patients were discharged after being cured of the contagion during the past 24 hours, they said.
 
With the death of one more patient from Covid-19 in Kargil district, the total number of fatalities in Ladakh has gone up to 58 - 34 in Kargil and 24 in Leh district. Five residents each in Leh and Kargil tested positive for the virus on Sunday, taking the total number of cases in the region to 4,103, the officials said.

Russia records 8,135 Covid-19 cases in past 24 hours
Russia has registered 8,135 Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, up from 7,867 yesterday, bringing the cumulative case total to 1,159,573, the coronavirus response center said on Monday.

"In the past 24 hours, Russia has confirmed 8,135 Covid-19 cases in 84 regions, of which 2,200 (27 percent) were detected actively, with people showing no clinical symptoms," the response center said in a statement, specifying that the total count has now reached 1,159,573.

Maharashtra: 214 new Covid-19 cases in Aurangabad; 7 more die
Aurangabad has added 214 new Covid-19 cases, taking the tally in the Maharashtra district to 32,993, an official said on Monday.
 
The district also reported seven more deaths due to Covid-19 on Sunday, raising the toll to 916, he said. As of now, there are 5,961 Covid-19 cases in the district, while 26,116 patients have recovered from the viral infection, the official said.

Israel, West Bank, Gaza report Covid-19 resurgence
Fresh coronavirus outbreaks have been reported in Israel, West Bank and Gaza, leading to renewed proposals and measures aimed at curbing a further spread of the virus, it was reported.
 
As of Sunday, the Health Ministry reported 226 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total in Israel to 229,374, with 68,788 of them considered active, reports Haaretz news.
 
At least 1,512 patients are hospitalized, a record number since the outbreak began, while 749 of them are in serious condition, nearing the 800-patient threshold health officials have warned would lead to a collapse of the Israeli health system.

Coronavirus woes: Australia's Qantas 8 weeks away from running out of money
A Sydney court heard on Monday that Australia's flag carrier Qantas was just eight weeks away from running out of money due to massive losses incurred in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
 
The airline was taken to the Federal Court by the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association, which has challenged the legality of terminating about 450 Qantas and Jetstar maintenance engineers, ABC said in a news report. Read on...
