LIVE updates: Farmers' protest in Punjab, New Delhi, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu

A state-wide bandh would be observed in Karnataka today by various farmers' organisations, protesting the amendments to the APMC and land reforms Acts made by the B S Yediyurappa government in the state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Danish counterpart Mette Frederiksen would hold a virtual summit today that will provide a broad political direction to strengthen the collaborative bilateral partnership, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Sunday.

The Congress in Haryana has announced over a month-long agitation against the Centre's farm-related Bills from today.

Schools for classes 9-12 will resume in Bihar from today. Attending classes will not be mandatory, according to an order issued by the state's education department.

Meanwhile, China has lifted its ban on valid visas imposed earlier this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic and said that foreign nationals holding Chinese residence permits in three categories are allowed to enter the country from Monday without obtaining new visas.

Congress, allies stage protests against farm bills in Puducherry
The ruling Congress-led Secular Democratic Alliance staged demonstrations in Puducherry and Karaikal on Monday condemning the three Farm Reforms Bills the NDA government at the Centre had passed amid protests by opposition parties recently in Parliament. Chief Minister V Narayanasamy, legislators belonging to the ruling Congress and ally DMK, leaders and workers of the Left parties and other constituents of the alliance participated in the agitations.
 
The participants including the Chief Minister were seen wearing masks and also adhered to safety norms while taking part in the demonstration at the head post office.
 
The participants alleged the three Bills were "utterly injurious to farmers" and would give the upperhand to affluent farmers and big corporates to rule the roost, striking at the root of the well-being of the small and medium farmers.

SC asks UPSC to apprise of arrangements for civil services prelims amid Covid-19
The Supreme Court Monday asked the UPSC to apprise it by tomorrow the "logistical arrangements" made for conducting civil services preliminary exams on October 4 in view of alarming spurt of Covid-19 cases as also floods in various parts of the country.
 
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) opposed in the top Court a plea seeking postponement of the prelims amid the pandemic and the floods.
 
In a hearing conducted through video conferencing, a bench comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar, B R Gavai and Krishna Murari asked the UPSC to file an affidavit by Tuesday.

Agri bills are death sentence for farmers: Rahul
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday alleged that the agriculture-related laws are a "death sentence" for farmers whose voice has been crushed both inside and outside Parliament.

"The agriculture laws are a death sentence to our farmers. Their voice is crushed in Parliament and outside. Here is proof that democracy in India is dead," he said on Twitter.
 
Gandhi tagged a news report along with his tweet that claimed that Opposition members demanding a division of votes were on their seats when the farm bills were passed in the Rajya Sabha, while the government said they were not.

Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses continue to ply on roads in Mangaluru despite a statewide bandh being observed by various farmers' organisations on Monday against the amendments to the agricultural produce market committee (APMC), land reforms ordinances and labour laws introduced by the BS Yediyurappa government.
